Employment application question

My DS applied to the utility company my husband works for as a student helper every spring since he turned 16. He's never gotten so much as call back for an interview. He's been really dilligent about hand delivering the application to human resources and calling back to check for openings.

Well we found out his girlfriend's mom - who works for the same company, gets to review all of the applications that come in. She has NEVER SEEN DS's... that means that someone in HR has been tossing DS's application every year. And it's not just him, he has a couple of other friends that she says she's never seen their applications. She is looking into it to see if she can find out what happened to his application.

I know it's not because his Dad is an employee - heck they used to get preferential treatment. If his application has been getting tossed out is there anything we can do?

I know from my previous experience that they are required to keep all applications on hand for at least 60 days. Some states require 90. I would check with the workforce commision in your state and see what, if anything, can be done. Employers are required to keep these mainly for auditing purposes with unemployment claims, but I'm sure there are other reasons.

My husband works for an electric utility and my father also worked for another electric utility until his retirement.

They had strict policies that did not allow family members to work at the same company - a no nepitism policy.

I know the company my husband works for would not allow our sons
to be hired at all and that would include summer help.

You may want to check and see if that is the reason.

DH's company does not have a nepitism policy... other than family members can't work for the same department. So DS would not be allowed to work in the warehouse that DH is foreman at... but he could work anywhere else in the company.
