I think the problem is that we are comparing apples to oranges here. E-nights had to be paid for, EMH is not. If you have something that is going to cost you, then perhaps you might think twice about it. But, if it's free, then why not go? If you had to pay for it, then you might say, the heck with that, I'll just head to MGM for the evening.
For those of us who very fondly remember the old E-nights, it's sometimes hard to go to evening EMHs and enjoy them. It is a completely different type experience. But, I still go to the occasional EMHs...especially during the fall/winter months. In the summer, like I said before, if we do an EMH evening, it's to avoid that nasty humidity during the day.
It's all about expectations. And knowledge before you get there!!
