Emetophobia @ WDW

OMG, I am completely freaking out here! Just found out there is a terrible stomach virus going around in my area (NYC), so I am completely nervous now about all of us catching it. My son's last day of school was today and ours is tomorrow (DH and I are both teachers) so that makes me feel a little better but still.....

It's a norovirus, the type that causes bad vomiting. Needless to say I get this way whenever something like this is around. And I have had several students recently return from absences with a note stating they had a stomach virus (some even said the child was vomiting all day...too much info!). Then I get so nervous and anxious that I feel nauseous (or just nerves in my stomach), and then I convince myself I have it. Help!

I just saw that on CW11... Just wash your hands after being in public I'm sure youll be fine :)

I've been dealing with this for a long time, or well, maybe most of my life.
I haven't been sick for about.. 8 years now? I was car sick, didn't eat breakfast, drank too much apple juice... Since then, I've only almost been sick twice. I've basically learned how to keep myself from being sick.
For about two years, I constantly felt sick, mostly due to the fact that I was so panicked about being sick that my mind just made me think that I was ill. It controlled me. I hardly ate. When I went to Disney, I felt sick all the time. I would only eat like half my meal, I wouldn't get on Mission Space... I avoided my brother when he said he felt ill.

My grandfather is coming home for Christmas, and he's been ill all week, my dad thinks it's the Norwalk Virus, which freaks me out. I don't want to catch that, I don't want to be vomitting for like 48 hours straight.

Your one of the lucky ones who can handle seeing it! I honestly get the creeps just walking by small garbage cans or even buckets. :( I also get scared when people cough so much because I'm scared it'll make them sick.

Hearing someone cough violently does creep me out because it sounds like they are about to throw up and it does turn my stomach, but for some reason, actually seeing someone do it, doesn't bother me. Having little children will get you over that, especially babies, because they spitting up and burping up all the time.

Just be sure to keep your eyes opened when you are there. I cant tell you how many times I saw that someone had puked their magic all over the walkway...and just left it there! Why dont these people alert a CM? I have never seen puked up magic on a ride though!

Aren't phobias the pits? I feel for you. I don't have a fear of throwing up, but have a rather extreme phobia of going to the dentist (and, ironically, my father is a retired dentist!).

Have you ever talked to a therapist about this? The right therapist can help you develop coping skills when you feel panicky. There is a dental fears research clinic at University of Washington, and I started going there about 7 or 8 years ago. They have a therapist on staff who helps people deal with their phobias. They help each individual decide what will work best for them - it's very specific to each person. They helped me so much - I worked with the therapist to develop my own coping strategies (which include deep breathing and other methods). It has helped me enormously -- it helps me feel more in control of my fears. Perhaps a therapist could help you, too!
I can totally identify. I have a terrible dental phobia, I haven't been to the dentist in 15 years. My husband takes my DD to the dentist and also takes care of loose teeth. I will flip out if I see someone with a loose tooth. I dropped out of medical school because I passed out in the ER when someone spit out a tooth, I still have nightmares about that. You can hand my your spleen and I'm OK, hand me a tooth and I lose it big time.

So for all of you guys with the ementophobia worried about having kids, I totally understand. Praise god I have a husband that can take care of my DD's dental needs, I don't know what I'd do without him. Maybe your husbands or SOs can take stomach duty for your kids.

I am working on my phobia, I do realize it is totally irrational (that's what a phobia is). I am working on getting my teeth cleaned, I have a prescription for some anxiety medication to take for my appointment and have begun to talk myself up. I haven't made the appointment yet, but hopefully I'll be able to.

Phobias suck! Big Time!

Good Luck everyone!

This is a great thread. My fear is about vomiting myself and is really bad if I see or hear someone else do so. I cringe when movies and TV shows (stay away from reality TV) depict these scenes.

However, I have really improved with age and time. I'm still freaked out by it, it's just less severe. Last weekend I went to the restroom at the Biergarten in Epcot only to find a line out the door of the men's room - a rare sight. I gave up and came back after the meal only to open a stall door and see a pile of puke on the floor! Ick, even writing this makes me feel a little sick to the stomach. I high-tailed it out of there mighty fast, but I didn't freak out or get sick myself and I see that as a success. This was my 6th trip to WDW and my first time seeing anything like this so I suppose those are good odds.

Oh, and about getting sick yourself on rides... I do have a tendency towards motion sickness (though I never actually throw up) so I was scared of EE and others. We also stayed at WL and used boat transportation almost every day. To be on the safe side I took bonine almost every morning and I did great. The backward part of EE scared me near to death and I did feel a bit dizzy when we got off, but I didn't feel at all nauseated.

Abminer, that's a great idea about taking Bonine. I always take that when I go on cruises, even if the weather is supposed to be calm the whole time. It's like my little security blanket. I have also thought of taking Bonine for my Disney trip so I could feel much more at ease about rides.

DH loves (I mean LOVES) roller coasters, and so far (even though he is little) I can see my older son following in his footsteps. As a small child I loved all rides. However, when I was about 9 or 10, we went to Hershey Park and I had gone on many rides (including the Trailblazer roller coaster) and loved them. The last ride I went on that day was the Scrambler with my uncle, and I felt so sick and dizzy, which was when I discovered that I hate spinning rides. I also started to dislike all rides because the nausea was such a turnoff. What a shame for me though. Since my son loves all rides so far, I would like to build back up to going on rides again. Not crazy loop-de-loop ones, just normal roller coasters and stuff. I did take him on the kiddie coaster at Dutch Wonderland this past August and I was so nervous but did not show it to my son. He loved the roller coaster and even though I felt a little uneasy about it, in the longrun I was glad I went and kind of broke the ice for myself, starting out very small. No motion sickness meds were used for that trip, just mustering up the courage to go on the ride!! And I did like it and am so glad I went on. I also took him on the kiddie coaster at Coney Island this summer and he loved that too. I want to try Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at MK in July. Good larger coaster to start with? My older son should be big enough for it by July (he nearly is now), and we could do the child swap thing if DH also wants to go on. What do you think? I will also take Bonine first thing each morning!!

This thread is wonderful! I am so glad to have found everyone here. It is good to talk about phobias especially since you find out you are not alone at all and there are so many other people that have the same phobia (probably just as many out there have it, as many as those out there who do not understand it). Thanks everyone for being here and for "listening" and discussing and sharing your feelings about it too!

Take care,
Bonnie
