Embrodiery Design Software

Does anyone make their own embroidery designs? What software do you use?

I have a viking/husquavarna machine. Can't afford the viking software so a friend told me about embird.
So far for what I do the basic is good. But I think I'll purchase the designing module too. I want to take old cutwork files and use the cutwork needles with them.
