Email Show - Disney Merchandise

In the email show, Pete mentioned the discontinuation of resort-specific merchandise. I can back him up on this. When I stayed at the Yacht Club in October, their merchandise was being discontinued, but they were keeping Beach Club merchandise. From the cast members with whom I spoke, I got the feeling that DVC resorts might be continuing to sell resort-specific merchandise, but that it would be phased out at the other resorts. This wasn't stated firmly, however.

Hope this helps, and I'm wishing everyone a magical day and a wonderful weekend!

This decision completely baffles me. Not the first time a Disney decision has baffled, but this one is really something. I ALWAYS buy resort specific merchandise when I stay somewhere. Not even just Disney, any resort type place. Coffee mugs, key chains, magnets, Christmas ornaments, t-shirts, sweatshirts. All memories of your trip and where you stayed. I have a coffee mug from every Disney resort I've stayed at. I'm so sick of the dumbing down of Disney merchandise I can't stand it. :headache:

But look at all the money you will save. Money that Disey will not get because you won't buy it because it "is all the same".

And think of your memories - they will be great memories in your head, instead of clutter (Coffee mugs, key chains, magnets, Christmas ornaments, t-shirts, sweatshirts) that you will not have to pay for, store, dust, wash, worry about.

Just trying to find something positive in the non-resort specific stuff.

Do you ever watch Clean House? They always say this about your memories. You have them in your head, you don't need the clutter to have your memories.

Well, ..... YES I DO!!!!!!! I need all my coffee, mugs, key chains, magnets, ect. The memories may be in my head, but the stuff makes me think of them. Every morning when I pick out which Disney mug I'm going to use, I spend a minute or two thinking about that trip. Whenever someone comments on my Epcot Flower and Garden keychain, I spend a few seconds at Epcot. Life is rush, rush, rush. Who takes the time to relive a happy memory? I do. A little everyday, when I pick up that mug, move the magnet, hang the Christmas ornament.....Sorry Niecy Nash! I need my memory clutter. :teeth:

DISCLAIMER!: My house looks NOTHING like any of the ones on Clean House, I have creatively displayed clutter! :rotfl:

I also have creatively displayed clutter. What am I going to do now?

That's fine that we have the memories, but I also like to be able to look at the magnet, keychain or mug and remember those good times as well. Those items remind me of my happy place!

For me, not only is it about the memories, but a collection as well. I LOVE to collect shot glasses and mugs from everywhere I go. I like having a collection of them, and love the feeling of adding a new item to the shelf among the others in the collection when I get back from a trip, and seeing that collection grow.

I am the same way with shot glasses and pins. Not just at Disney, but everywhere I want to remember.

Crud. The resort stuff is the stuff I like. I love my Beach Club sweatshirts!

Ditto.....I too love my resort souvenirs. I still have my Dixie Landings tshirt and my French Quarter tank top (among others). This is the one thing that I allow myself to buy when we go, something from the resort.

They have been doing this since 2008. I asked at Pop on one of our trips in 2008 about a pen and shot glass I had seen on our first trip in 2007 and the CM said that Disney is not going to be carrying items with resort logos on them any more. The only thing I found with Pop's logo on it was a pin.

I don't know about Clean House. I have seen Clean Sweep a few times. I have read books by Peter Walsh and try to be influenced by what he says. I am influenced by living in a small apartment with very limited storage.

I have a friend who collects shot glasses. Her son tells her when she dies, they all go in the trash.

I have collected postcards since I was very young and they were five cents each or six for twenty-five cents. I have them indexed in boxes and look at them every five years or so. When I die, they will be trash.

Yes, I am most definitely influenced by cleaning out my recently deceased mother. So much stuff!

If you truly use the souvenirs, then fantastic! That is the best. Really!

In two trips to WDW, I brought home a few things. A mug that has stuff collected in it. A plastic cup with sparkles in it, use it in the bathroom. And a picture frame I have never but a photo in. But I purposely did not shop much.

Oh, yes! I did shop and bought a pair of earrings in "England". I wear them often. But the silver Celtic knots were oddly made in Thailand. And I could have purchased them "anywhere".

Back on topic again.
I do agree, more unique souvies would be much better! :thumbsup2

Disney is trying to help me save money.

They start selling absolute crap, so I save there.

Then do this whole Disneyland/Disney World thing, more saved.

Now they're getting rid of resort-themed T-shirts and jackets???

There will soon be nothing left I want...which makes not buying stuff much easier. :)

Disney's saving pennies is going to cost them dollars in the long run. Sure, buying in bulk is cheaper. But not selling or selling at a discounted price is going to cost them. I hate the Disney Parks stuff. I won't buy it. Disney, if your reading this, I won't buy generic stuff, I will decrease my souvineer budget. I also won't spend it elsewhere on property. It comes home with me.:thumbsup2

This makes me very sad.

These sound like words from a cavalier, young man that hasnt really considered the loss of a parent.

If my Mom suggested that she wanted to collect old, empty jelly jars....I'd offered to help wash, dry and display her collection.

More money to spend on the increased price of tickets. :sad1:

This son has actually already dealt with the loss of one parent. He is certainly not looking forward to the death of his mother. But he doesn't want to be the caretaker of her collection after her death. He did, however, say that he would keep the couple shot glasses from the collection that were from a place he went with his mother.

It is the right thing, Kevin, to help your mother now with her jelly jars. But what about later?

I speak from current experience. None of my siblings wants my mother's spoon collection. Or her Christmas houses. I am sure no one will want my postcard collection or my collection of miniature perfume bottles.

My lesson learned while clearing out Mom's house - I am going to spend my money on experiences!

But if other people want to bring home souvenirs to help keep their memories alive, that is indeed a fine thing.

Whether an offspring wants the personal effects after the loss of a loved one is something to be decided at that time...in my opinion.

Discussing what you will do with a loved one's treasured knickknacks while they are still here seems a bit callous and calculating Again...my opinion.

We have a collection of black coral jewelry that we love. What becomes of it once we're gone is irrelevant to how I feel about it now. The fact that it might end up in the trash after we're gone will not dissuade me from loving it and adding to our collection as we see fit.

I'm just always surprised that when the subject arises of any sort of luxury purchase (Dooney & Bourke purses, Kindles, iPads, iPods, Disney doodads etc) that there are folks that chime in with the opinion that these things should not be purchased and that the money spent would be better spent in another way....or not spent.

I guess I'm of the belief that it's none of my business how anyone else spends or doesnt spend their money.

Oh yeah....as for my Mother's jelly jar collection.....if it gives her joy and/or pleasure to collect old jelly jars than I'm going to be right there with her. She's here now. She has a right to purchase and enjoy what makes her happy and if it makes her happy....then by association...it makes me happy.
