Email notification for items posted on craigslist?

Is there a way to set up an email notification for items posted for sale on craigslist? I am looking for a kids kitchen and have missed several because by the time I check it they are already gone.

If you look at the bottom of any search page on Craigslist, you'll see an orange "RSS" button. Click on it and it will take you to a page with the RSS (really simple syndication) URL for that search.

If you already have some sort of news or RSS reader you're all set - just give it the RSS URL. There are plugins for Firefox, and I suspect for Internet Explorer as well.

I just installed RSSPopper (http://www.paradisoft.com/rsspopper/rsspopper.asp) for Microsoft Outlook to capture my RSS feeds. With RSS popper, I get an e-mail of each CL posting that matches my search criteria. RSSPopper checks for new CL messages in my search every 15 minutes (configurable, but don't go overboard!)

I looked at CLGenie, and while it has some interesting features, one glaring omission is a privacy policy. By using RSS, you're really not giving out any more information than if you just sat at the computer re-running your search every 15 minutes. By having CLGenie run your search for you, they can see what you and all their users are searching for. I don't know what they do with that information (if anything) but I can see it being of great interest to marketing companies. Since I don't see any advertising on their site and there's no cost to the service, one has to wonder how they are paying for the service?

Also, don't know if you tried or not but don't be afraid to post a wanted ad for it. I'd post it in the toys category or whatever category you see them listed for sale. This is how I sold my step 2 outside play set. I had posted it last year with no takers... which was odd because usually they too are gone fast if you are looking for one. This year I happened to see someone post a wanted for it. She said she was looking and looking, they were always taken already. Everyone told her posting a wanted was useless since everyone is looking for them, but she got mine!

We've also noticed that the bulk of items are posted on saturday morning. At 8:30 a couple of weeks ago there was only 1 bike of the type we were looking for by 10 AM there were almost 200!
