Em has the flu AND Pneumonia!! **Update page 4**

So sorry to hear this. There is a girl that was confirmed with the flu in my daughter's class on Sat. She was running a 102.6 fever WITH Tylenol. The doc told the mom NO SCHOOL until at least tomorrow or Thursday at the earliest. That is to help keep it out of the school and to keep her from getting to tired out and her resistance down even more. The important thing with pneumonia (I've had it 8 times so I've learned along the way) is to keep the mouth covered in the cold air. The more cold air that gets in the lungs hurts pneumonia because it makes the lungs work harder. And keep hydrated. Don't get dried out - that hurst too. I feel so bad for Em and I hope you can get her soon. I'll keep her in my prayers.

I can't believe the school is even allowing her to be in class!! :earseek: My kids school will call a parent to come and pick up the child if the fever is as low as 98.9!!

My daughter takes her last dose of antibiotic tonight for pneumonia. Our doctor said that as long as she didn't have a fever, she was fine to go to school. Otherwise, she was to stay home. She hasn't had a fever since Friday night. :D The pedetrician did say that IF the pneumonia is not treated, it could develop into the flu. This poor little girl must of been sick for awhile to of gotten so bad. :(

{HUGS} for you and your family :grouphug: (and a kick in the fanny for a awful mother!! )

:grouphug:
...let us know how she is...

Hope all will be well.. hope you can get her and take care of her...

We all came down with a cold (not the flu thankfully, and not while on vacation) but we all feel pretty miserable right now...

You cant take chances this season with how this flu is going... doesnt she listen to the news?

I understand what bigsis1970 is saying about being defensive when the the ex's wife or SO tries to help... I do not like it when my exs wife tries to tell me something... but thats a whole nother story! Just try to make it sound like she knows whats shes doing and you dont think you can do better than her, you just want to help her out.... she might just being difficult because she doesnt want you to show her up on how much better a job you can do than her!

Poor thing. :( I agree, she should NOT be in school, and I pray that her mom lets her come stay with you so she can get the proper care. P&PD heading that way.

Exactly... your 55,000 friends are here sending good thoughts to Em, hoping she's feeling much better soon, and crossing our fingers that you get to see her sooner than you expected! That has to be especially hard that you can't take care of her yourself right now, I am sure!

Lots of magical pixie dust is on the way for Em, transported by... Monorail of course! :)

Here's to hoping that Em rests up (OUT of school) and that you and Del are graced by her presence soon.

It must be hard in a situation like that. Perhaps her mother thinks that you are trying to show her up, which is sad, considering Em would be the one suffering. Flu and pneumonia....I couldn't imagine at the age of 18. :(

Robin~~~

Many prayers for Em- this is very scary for you and your family- I've been there with my older son who is 6; he had pneumonia when he was 2 and it FREAKED me out. I hope that your angle of telling the Mom that if you watched her, she wouldn't have to miss any more work, more money for Christmas or bills, etc. I know lots of mom's like that (worked as a daycare supervisor for years---I have made my share of phone calls to moms with sick kids---unfortunately there are more than a few who put their job over their kid's well-being) and most of them are thrilled to be able to dump of said sick child with a relative so they can return to their precious job. I understand money being tight, but it would make me so mad, because often these moms just thought their kids weren't being "tough enough." Ugh. Please keep us updated and I pray that you are able to pick her up TODAY, that mom will loosen up and most importantly, that Em makes a very speedy recovery.

Sending my bestest thoughts and wishes to you and your family at this time... From one -em to another :)

Everything will work out in time sometimes its hard to wait until that point.

Keep us posted! and let us know if there is anything we can do- 55,000 calls to the mom *might* make her change her mind... :)

Oh that poor little stinker..... I hope she gets better REAL soon..... Hopefully her mother will come to her sences and realize exactly how sick she is and ask for your help......
Sending buckets and buckets of PD and get well wishes.....

I keep coming back to check for updates. I'm hoping that since we aren't seeing any, it means that you were able to head out to get her early this morning!

I'll add my part to the 55,000 phone calls to her mom.

Well we have been playing phone tag all morning.

Her mom isn't going to budge on letting us have her now.

I have 'smile, nod and agreed' so much this morning that my head hurts.

We are afraid of pushing Em's mom, and not getting her this weekend, so we have to play nice.

Which is getting harder and harder to do.

Especially when she informed me that Em will be going to school tommorrow because her fever is back to normal.....

ALL SHE HAS IS A COUGH!

Gee, could that maybe have anything to do with the pneumonia?!?

I can't get her to understand how serious this is. Em is on an antibiotic called zyphromax (sp? MScott HELP!) that she takes once a day for 6 days. She is on day three today.

I spoke with Em and she told me she still isn't feeling good and she though maybe she should go to Disney where it is warm.

Yes, Em will now become Master Gunnry Sargent ahead of Commando Nikki.

When she gets here on Saturday she wants to lay on the couch and watch our home movies. Thats as close as we can get to Disney this weekend.

I am feeling better that the fever is down, I will admit I am still scared. I wont feel better until she is here and I can look at her myself.

At least once Em is here, she doesn't go back with her mom until after school vacation in January.

I'm also going to call the school tommorrow and give them a heads up. I just can't get over that. But our hands are tied.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. I am a strong believer in the power of prayer. Thank you again so much.

I really, really mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say...

LOVE YOU, MEAN IT!!!

Well, sometimes ya gotta deal with crappy times!...sorry this is one of those!...

One thought - When you talk to the mom tonight, I asume she is going to work tomorrow??? Remind her that your home, if Em's school HAPPENS to call (which of course, they WILL)...that you'll be happy to go get her...afterall, you "understand" how much time she has already missed etc...

Now after you call the school, and explain your concern that Em is feeling okay, with the given diagnosis...of course the schools going to check with the school nurse, who in turn will probably call EM into her office, and ask her how she feels, EM will feel yucky, her mom will be at work, and you'll have to go pick her up, ....

Okay- thats wishful thinkin, but ya gotta admit, it's a good plan!

I sure hope she gets better REALLY soon....

Zythromax is the name of the medicine and it is Wonderful. She should be feeling better soon

AWWWWW Poor little EM....... Only 11 1/2 more months till Disney:rolleyes:
Now when Em's mom gets sick and wants to stay home remind her that she cannot miss work she has to go NO MATTER WHAT, wait till she wants you to take EM so she can get some rest because she does not feel good. Some people I tell ya.
Still more buckets of PD coming your way......

I'm glad someone can understand my spelling, we all know how awful it is.

What happened to the 10 day antibiotics that you took 3 times a day? Is this one more powerful because she is so sick?

The sicker the child, the stronger the meds? Or is this just a new type of med?

I am not sure if it is a stronger medicine,But i do know that the last time i was sick for 3 weeks and had been on 3 diffrent meds and then they gave me Zythromax and in 3 days i was better. This stuff is Wonderful and it did not upset my stomach like all the other antibiotics.

Zithromax is a different class "type" of antibiotic than the 1 tsp three times a day medicine. It works on a differerent kind of bacteria that sometimes causes pneumonia. It is more geared towards that "bug" than the amoxicillins and ceclor type meds.. Does that make sense. (20 year pediatric nurse here). I hope she get to feeling better.

I hope little Em is better soon. I was out of work for 2 full weeks with flu and pneumonia a couple of years ago. I can't imagine a child going back to school after only a couple of days.
