I started run/walk training last year and have been in full outside mode. I am wanting to purchase a treadmill or an elliptical for inside. What's the opinions out there? One better than the other? :confused3 Is it just a personal preference or is there an advantage one over the other? Which do you guys prefer? Thanks in advance for any help!!

I have both. I started working out on a treadmill. And I found it really boring. then I was in a sporting goods store and tried the elliptical. I thought it was really fun. I thought about it and debated about it for a year. In the mean time I started walking outside more. My treadmill is really old and I never used it. Then my DH got me the elliptical. I really like it but it doesn't really compare to walking outside. I feel like I'm running on it and it says I'm only doing a 15 min mile. But I really like it. So I vote elliptical. Or go to a store and really try them out and see how you feel!

I have a bad knee, that I hope will get better once I lose all this weight, so the treadmill hurts me, I LOVE the ellipitcal!

I cant get behind the elliptical. I have a very long stride so the rotation always makes me feel like I am shuffling. There is a new one I saw on TV (bowfelx or something) that accounts for that though, so that might be an option for people with longer legs.

My advice, go to a gym store and try them out. You will see what feels the best.

I have an elliptical .. debating about different kids for a long time.. went to various stores and tried them out. talked to my bil who is a dr.. his advice was to look at the way you step on it and the distance betweeen the steps .. I bought a basic on sale Precor..

I found this on a website.. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060916200722AAr0ae6

yes, a cross-trainer is. with both of them you can get low-impact cardio, so they're both good in that sense, but with a cross-trainer, more muscles have to be used and used more effectively in order ot keep it going (so it does more good to more muscles) with a treadmill, your body can fatigue and you can still be "riding" it. you've seen people "riding" a treadmill rather than walking or running on one, right? their toes are dragging, their sneakers might even squeak on it, their legs are going back onlly because their feet are by gravity sticking to the propelled conveyor.

on the other hand, with a cross-trainer, if you aren't actually moving it, there's no way you can continue to be propelled. you do 100% of the work on one of them. you won't be able to last 30 minutes on one right away like you probably would on a treadmill, but 10 minutes on one of those hits more muscles and more effectively than 30 minutes of treadmill. i've done both and definitely get more out of the crosstrainer. treadmills make great warmups, but they are NOT actual running or walking. get the crosstrainer and be prepared to get a workout!!!

I'd say it depends on what your health/exercise goals are, your physical condition (especially legs/knees), what you want the equipment to do, and what is your access to other equipment.

For runners, the elliptical is generally considered XT equipment that closely mimics running but without the impact. "Running" on an elliptical, however, is not running because of that difference in impact. It may prepare your legs for motion, but it will not prepare you for pounding the pavement. That's why an elliptical is great for XT, for keeping your HR up & for working the legs, but isn't a substitute for running if you're training for a race and especially a distance race. (Although many people, myself included, use the elliptical as a central part of our training programs.) However, with the right elliptical trainer--and by this I mean one that has you working your upper body as well as your lower body--you can get a good workout that will condition your body & supplement your RWs outdoors.

A TM will help prepare you for running outdoors much more closely, although it is easier on your knees than the pavement/sidewalk. (It's also harder on your knees than the elliptical.) While it's true that the TM might do some of the "work" for you, as a PP noted, any TM that provides you with the ability to set an incline can offset the machine's effort & have you work harder. Although most running/race training programs tell you that you cannot train for a long-distance race entirely on a TM, that's debatable. Both my partner & I trained for Goofy 2008 on a TM 90% of the time and we both finished & finished well for our respective goals. (He's ran, I RW.) We've also trained for other events in this way, so using the TM to train wasn't a one-time shot. A TM, though, does not give your upper body the workout a good elliptical or other piece of XT equipment would, plus working out extensively on a TM involves high-impact on joints.

Ultimately, I agree with all the PPs who suggested you "try before you buy." I suggest getting a one-day or one-week membership to a gym & take the tour. Ask questions of the trainers about what one piece of equipment you should use for your situation. Ask them for brand/store recommendations. I've never met a trainer who wouldn't be delighted to answer your questions, and without the vested interest some (not all) salespeople have.

One last question: why choose home equipment over a gym membership, where you could have both? Even a temporary gym membership might give you the experience with both an elliptical & a TM that would allow you to make the decision that best fits your needs. (I can think of many reasons, your location, your work schedule, your comfort level in a gym, health reasons...it's more or less a rhetorical question for you to consider before buying.)

Excellent question and answers. I have nothing to add about choosing.

I'm interested in what you decide upon after all these choices.

I belong to a gym so I've tried out a variety of ellipticals and I LOVE the Arc Trainer:

http://www.cybexintl.com/Products/displayproduct.aspx?id=350A

It moves really smooth and I burn LOTS more calories vs. a regular elliptical machine. On an elliptical I burn 300 calories in 1/2 hr and on the Arc Trainer I burn 450 calories in a half an hour.

I'm not sure how much they cost, but it is an awesome machine.

I agree with the post that suggested a gym membership. Mixing up your cardio workout is the key, and the best way to do that is to use TMs, elipticals, stationary bikes, etc. If you must pick just one machine, to use in your home I would choose whichever is easier on your body impact wise. :thumbsup2

This is my first post to this board. I have been to the disney boards but never realized till tonight there was a weight loss one here. I vote for the eliptical too. I liked them both but got rid of my treadmill because it took up so much room. The eliptical does about the same amount of workout for me and takes up less space. I think it is MUCH better on my bad knees since there is absolutely no pounding like on the treadmill.

Great advice. We went and tried them both out this past weekend (we live in a REAL rural area-20+miles from the closest gym). We are leaning toward the elliptical but are gonna take our time before we decide. Thanks to all!:thanks:

Glad you are taking your time to make sure it is what you want. Let us know what you decide. I'm interested.

Well the wait is over. Got a good deal on a Precor 5.33 (last years model) elliptical so we bit the bullet. They delivered it today. My DW's foot and knee pain enter greatly into the decision. From all I've read there is less impact on the legs and feet. She tried walking 3 miles (outside) this week and had terrible heel pain. Anyhow the deed is done. Thanks to everyone for the advice and insight! Now off to exercise!!!

When I started really walking and running on a regular basis I would walk outside and do the treadmill inside which we've had for several years. After I joined the gym last summer, I began to use the elliptical there, but it does take a little "getting used to". Once comfortable on it, whenever I went to the gym I'd always do the elliptical over the treadmill. I

This Jan. we bought an elliptical for the house so I use it a lot and haven't opened the treadmill up since. I do walk and run outside as much as I can though, but in the late spring and summer here that's tough to do.

Our elliptical at home is not "gym quality" but it does the trick. I haven't gone to the gym as much since we've gotten the elliptical. I've been going back and forth about getting rid of our treadmill HOWEVER last year I went through a month of a back injury and the only exercise I could do was walk. I wouldn't have been able to use the elliptical when I was healing SO I really don't want to get rid of the treadmill for that reason.

ALL that being said, if I had to chose between the 2 I'd PROBABLY go with the elliptical because I feel that it's a better workout AND it's not as boring as the treadmill.
