Elf on the Shelf - slightly annoyed

My kids only kind of sorta almost got into it but it never materialized as the trend of naughty ezra and all the crazy things he did started just as they stopped believing in santa. But elf on a shelf is definitely not new. My mom has one, and it was her mom's. Same exact elf as is sold with the book. Similar story, the elf is here to watch you and report back to santa if you do anything bad. It has to 50 years old if not older. Kind of moth eaten now so it never comes out of the box. Thing is when I was a kid the elf NEVER left the tree and no one thought anything about. The problem at hand is not the book, it's not the elf, it's PINTREST and all these people who feel they have to keep up with the uber mom's who are posting their ideas on pintrest oh, and facebook, because if I see one more naughty ezra post on facebook this year I'm seriously gonna puke.

I know my mother had almost of dozen of these things when I was a kid. Ornaments for the tree. Maybe 4 or 5 inches long.

My mother had about half a dozen to hang on the tree. Then one year she bought that spray-on "snow" to give the finishing touch to the tree, and ended up ruining them.

No elves, gnomes, fairies, pixies, leprechauns, etc. for me. They creep me out. So do whatever these things were. Troll dolls.

I think there's more going on here than just Santa if you feel your parents pretended he existed for their own amusement.

I personally don't understand the need to tell children that Santa isn't real. My dd is 16. Santa still brings gifts here for everyone and there's never been a discussion about him. There's a little bit of Santa in everyone IMO.

Several years ago when my youngest sister was in college, my siblings and I were all "home" at my parents house for Christmas. We ranged in age from 19 or 20 to 25 or 26. And just a few minutes after we had all gone to bed, we hear my mom go up to the attic and start bringing presents downstairs.
My sister then yells "ummmm... SANTA! I don't think you're supposed to come until everyone in the house is asleep, remember?!?" So my poor mom went to her room for half an hour so we could all "go to sleep" before Santa came. it was goofy, but also pretty awesome. Clearly my parents never broke the news to us that Santa isn't real ;-)
