Our elementary school has changed our pick-up policy, one I didn't think there was a problem with. So, I'm wondering if anyone would share with me what the policy is at your school. I'm talking about the students who are picked up every day by parents, not walkers or busers.

You drive up there, either park or wait in the pick up line. Car riders were dismissed along with the walkers.

If you parked you had to get out of your car and meet them outside the door. The kids are not allowed to cross the parking lot.

Our car pick up students are to report to the lunchroom at first bell and wait until their name is called on the walkie talkie. A couple of paras stand outside to call the names in the order that the cars are lined up.

We have very few car riders; parents in cars must follow the below grade-specific procedures.

Bus students are picked up by paras and taken to the buses in groups.

PK students must be signed in and out daily by parents and that is done in their classrooms.
K and 1 dismiss into the lunchroom. Each class sits at a table and parents come in and get their children.
2-5 dismiss in designated spots outside and must be picked up by parents unless the parents have communicated with the teacher that their child has permission to walk home alone/with a sibling/neighbor etc.

This is an elementary school in NYC.

Kids being picked up by parents must wait in the cafeteria and parents must line up and sign their child out.

We have no walkers so the pick up kids are brought to the cafeteria. They stay on one side until their parents arrive. Parents or whomever must sign them out and show photo ID to the Principal or VP before child is released.

It doesn't really take that long. I'm assuming there was a reason for the change. There was no ID requirement when my son started there four years ago.

Kids leave their classes, parents pick them up cars on one side of the school. Pretty straightforward...:thumbsup2

Our car riders have a designated number that corresponds with the parent's tag on their rearview mirror (it's a permanent # throught all 6 yrs, K-5). The parents line up on the street and the kids stand on their respective numbered-tape in the hallway. The teachers yell out the numbers by walkie-takie and the kids run out and get in their parents' cars -- there are two lines (inside line for pre-school through 2) and outside (3-5). Sounds complicated, but it's really a fine art ...

Hi! 1st grade teacher here :teacher:

My school has over 600 students in K-5...none are walkers, just bus or car riders.

Parents are not allowed inside the building if they are picking up. They must wait outside in their cars. We have a "pick up" line, & they wait there.

Same here. The parents also have to show a pass (that is received in the beginning of the school year) to the para at the door. If you don't have the pass (left it at home, whatever) it's a bit more complicated.

my kids go to a large k-5 elem. school a little over 600 kids. The school has loads of parking that is not near the bus loop. Parents sign kids out and wait in the caf. then the secretary calls the names of kids being picked up about 5-7 minutes before the bus dismissal.

600-700 students where DS used to go to school.
A lot of parent pick up!

Car riders are dismissed at first bell. They go right to the front entrance of the school, which is the drop-off/pick-up area.
Parents pull up to the school and line up in a double pick-up line.
The children are escorted to the car by the school staff teachers/para...

No children can walk into parking areas.
The few parents who want to actually walk up into the school to pick up their children in person (to avoid the wait in the pick-up line) must park and walk to the cafeteria, which is also right at the front entrance of the school. Where they pick up their child(ren) in person.

We have a true neighborhood school that serves one square mile. The only bus-riders are EC and CC Kindergarten. Otherwise, the kids are either picked up, ride bikes, or walk home. The parents park on the street and meet the kids on the blacktop. We don't have any place for a car "line up". K kids and 1st graders are released to their parents. Other kids are free to either wait with their teachers for parents or to go home on their own. The teachers learn quickly which kids do what and know if something is odd.

We do have a lot of rules, though. No parking in the teacher lot (it is how the kids get from the blacktop to the street). All bikes must be "walked" on school grounds. Parents may not bring dogs on school property for pick-up. Kids have to cross the two closest streets where there are guards. Kids are encouraged to walk in groups and be wary of strangers. Kids are to respect the neighbors' property. Etc,.

DS goes to a small Catholic School. There are only 203 students K thru 8th grade. Parents line up in their cars and a teacher walks the line and calls the students on a walkie talkie in the order the cars are in. Then we just pull through the line and get our kids. Works well. But we are a small school.

Children are all dismissed from their classroom. Car pool is dismissed first,(paras take them out by classroom) then busses, then walkers.. You may park and go inside to pick up your child, but you are supposed to sign them out in the office if you do that. I work in the library in the afternoon, so my kids are dismissed with car pool, and they meet me in the library.

The car poolers wait under the awning while the two rows of cars pull up. The car should have a sign on their visor with the child's name and grade. A teacher with a walkie talkie walks through the approaching cars and calls out the kid's name on that to another teacher with the other one. She calls the name out, and a teacher grabs kiddos hand and takes him/her to the car and pops them in.

800+ students -elementary school K-5

At our local school (before we became HSers) the bell rang and kids cut loose from every door. Bus riders stood in line for the buses, and parents and their pick up kids were on their own to figure out a pick up place. Once the bell rang, the teachers were not in the picture except for the few assigned jobs outside as crossing guards. The Kindergarten teachers walked out with their class. 500 kids in the school.

My elementary school had us wait in the library where one of the PE teachers would supervise the students. The person picking the child up would have to show identification to pick up the child (the first few times, before the teacher knew your face), if they weren't the normal person a parent would have to call beforehand and give their name. If the parent didn't come for over an hour, the student would then wait in the office.

DD and her DH have to fill out an "approved" pick-up list each year.. The person who is doing the "picking up" has to park, go inside the school, show a photo ID, and if their name is not on the list, the child can not leave with them.. (DGD is in 5th grade this year..)

Can you tell us your old and new policy?

We don't have one :confused3 Just pick up and bye bye...That is if you pick up when the bell rings.

If it is a daycare child (after school), then you sign them in/out
