OP that is crazy. They did a report on the Today show a few weeks ago abouut the same thing and back problems. I think they said for it not to be more than 10% of the child's weight.
My dd's middle school has alleviated this problem. Each class has one set of books that stay in each classroom. The kids take one set of books home to use for homework, one each day the first week of school so they never have a heavy backpack.
If you're worried I'd urge you to take him for a check-up and then write a letter. I was tiny at school and carried a heavy back-pack because the lockers were in class-rooms so could only be accessed once a day. 10 years later I still suffer with really bad back pains because of it that could have been avoided. I also got bow legs from it too!
