We're traveling with our 3 kids (2, 5, & 8)...and since electronics are the easiest way to keep them entertained on the plane...we'll have a lot of them. I looked over the TSA site...but I just wanted to be clear. We'll have a laptop, video camera (does not use cassettes), digital camera, iphones, ipods, handheld video game device, and a tablet. Am I reading it correct that the laptop is the only thing we have that will need to be out of its bag to go through security screening?

You are 100% correct. Only the laptop needs to be in a separate bin.

Proper planning ensures a great trip! Dont worry too much about TSA or holding up the lines. Best of luck with your trip and have a great time!

To make things easier it would be great to invest in this backpack. When you go through security you DON"T have to take you laptop out. The backpack unzip and lays flat for scanning. Plus it safer than having an laptop go through the belt before you walk through the scanner. Especially since there was a big news story about TSA agents in Orlando stealing laptops and so forth. While you are in line for security take everything including your wallet out of your pockets and place it in the backpack then when you pass through security all you have to grab is the backpack and your shoes :)

I LOVE mine and have used it for many trips and never had problems at security. Got it at best buy

Thanks for the tip. We do have a briefcase type bag for the laptop. The top flap opens to show the laptop without having to completely remove it. I assume this serves the same purpose? Only drawback is it's not really a case you can easily carry by itself...it still will be packed in another bag. But still adds some level of protection over the putting the laptop in the bin by itself.

and don't forget HEADPHONES!!! The other passengers on the plane will appreciate that, and I think I've seen one airline require it if you are going to be watching movies, playing games with sound, etc.

No, it doesn't; in the bag you are referencing, you will need to remove. There are special bags that are designed to fold flat out and with virtually nothing between the laptop and the scanner/belt.

Also, although I hope it's assumed, just because you only have to remove your laptop from your bag, it doesn't mean if you pack too many electronics that cannot be clearly visible that they will not do additional searching.

Try to keep cables/cords separate from the equipment and don't over pack equipment on top of each other so that it makes it hard to distinguish items.
