where would we go to watch the electrical water parade/? boat to magic kingdom or contemporary? then where would be a good place to watch from/?

all of the magic kingdom resorts have excellent viewing of the water agent you'd need to call or look into times to verify where to be at what time.

i seem to recall that there is a viewing from each resort as it goes around the lagoon

Approximate times for Electrical Water Pageant are:
. . . Poly at 9:00pm
. . . Grand Floridian at 9:20pm
. . . Wilderness Lodge at 9:35pm
. . . Fort Wilderness at 9:45pm
. . . Contemporary at 10:05pm

All of these resorts have excellent views of the parade.
. . . The parade goes dark if Wishes is at the same time.
. . . Then the parade resumes.

Here is a pic of the Water Parade that I took 2 yrs. ago. A little blurry, but you can see any spot on the beach is a good spot.

Yup - great viewing right from the beach.
If you can time it to be on the ferry for either EWP or Wishes, also a fun view. One night, the ferry had to pull off to the side to let EWP pass - that was fun. Sort of like parade-side seats.
