Tomorrow my DS is getting an electric scooter for his birthday. He has a place to ride, so I'm not too worried about this, but am curious....

Do you know anything about the laws regarding riding these on the road? I don't mean ON the road, but on the side, like a bike? Also, with a helmet, of course. And I also should mention that there are no sidewalks available (are there ever sidewalks anymore :rolleyes2 )

A friend said the police gave her teen son a hard time for riding one on the road. I thought - how stupid. They go slower than a bike. Plus, don't people in cities use scooters as an alternate form of transportation? Sounded to me like the cops were just giving the kid a hard time (long-haired teen boy driving anything on the road gets looked at twice.) Or the kid was somehow being reckless.

Anybody have an experience with this? I know my DS is going to want to "go places" on the thing. IMO, he could crash just as easily on a bike. Easier, in fact. Scooter is closer to the ground and, as I said, goes slower (15 mph tops.) So I feel comfortable with him riding it around as he does with his bike. Just want to be on the up&up you know?

Is it like a Moped. I've seen people riding Moped's, but I thought they go faster than 15. I know many posted speed limits in towns are 25.

My son has a little dirt bike 110 that he rides in the pits at his races and he is not allowed to ride on the road. He just got a warning from the local sheriff not to cross or ride on the road. He was told if he ever does or gets caught he will get a fine.

We have village workers that ride around with mopeds on the road, can you post a picture?

know the electric scooters were a major discussion around our town a few years ago - by law they are only allowed on private property - no roads, no sidewalks. People were miffed to find out they could only use them in their driveways. Kids were actually being ticketed. Some people are trying to get the law re-written. I think it's a case of technology has surpassed whatever they were thinking when the law was first written.

Of course, laws like this vary from state to state. You'll want to find out what it is specifically in your area.

It is electric - not gas, in case that makes a difference. They list the top speed at 15. We'll see. I know when he rides his bike down the hill in our neighborhood, he's doing more than 15.

Is it like the "kick" scooter, just with the motor?

The police here give a hard time about them, I think because of certain previous accidents.

I would check local laws.

OK, I've seen those at Target. Anyway, they are not allowed on our sidewalks in our town-but they are allowed on the roads. Actually you can't do anything on the sidewalks except walk.

Call your village or city clerk-they can give you your local ordinance concerning these.

With gas prices this summer, my dd will be working about 1/2 mile away, and she just asked my husband for a moped cause she doesn't want to walk and I won't let her start up a vehicle for that little distance.

definitely not legal in PA, except for on private property...

They just had an article in our paper about motorized scooters and what is and isn't legal in our town. In our town to be able to ride them on the street the driver the driver has to be over 12, wearing a bike helmet if under 18, it has to have a headlight and tail lights and they have to be on all the time (like a motorcycle). They are not "allowed" on the sidewalks.
