Electric or Gas Oven?

We are going to be getting a new oven. The current one is electric but it would be easy to run a gas line since our basement is currently unfinished.

What do you recommend for the best cooking/baking?

We've had both.

We have gas now, and I'll never go back!

I don't know how to explain it other than to say it's easier to regulate the temp. I like it better for baking, cooking, but especially the stove top. If something is boiling or cooking too quickly, just turn it down, and it literally stops, you don't have to wait for a burner to cool down.

i like gas stoves/ovens as well. regulating the temp on the stove top for me is much easier with gas.

as a suggestion-if you will have to run a new gas line anyway. consider if there is anything else that you may want or need to run off that line in the future and consider the pipe size accordingly. we are having a new line put in for a generator, and i just happened to mention to the contractor that down the line i want to upgrade our gas stove/oven to one of the nicer/more burner ones, he took note of this and evaluated what our needs would be on the line he was putting in/working on-and upped the size of the pipe a bit. it cost no more than what we were already looking at, and will save $$$$$ vs. having to have someone replace that piping down the line.

btw-some of the dual fuel ovens out there are nice, so you might consider looking at those as well.

Are you getting a new stovetop as well?

My dream kitchen includes a 6 burner gas stovetop with double ovens.

I am not sure about just the oven with gas vs electric, except that when you turn it off it may cool off faster maybe? I don't know.

As far as stovetop, gas wins hands down.

I am a big proponent of using gas for cooking but mainly for a stovetop. My wall ovens are electric and, in some readings, I've heard that electric ovens do better than gas for temp. regulation. But for the cooktop (mine is separate from my oven) it is gas all the way!!

Dual-fuel...you want gas for the stove top burners as that is the easiest way to regulate that temperature, but for an oven you want electric, more even heating. Where gas has hot/cold spots. Now that being said its easier to heat up/cool down a gas oven quickly, but in an oven, consistency is more really what you are looking for.

Gas stove and electric oven. The best of both!!!! This is what I have and I love it. Since you've already got an electric line run all you would have to do is run some gas over and make sure you buy a combination appliance.

Didn't know you could get this.. My Dson-in-law might be interested in going this route when they do over their kitchen..:thumbsup2

I really like electric for baking - which I do a lot of.. It's okay for cooking too, but it's definitely a little harder to regulate the temperature..:goodvibes

Second the dual fuel for exactly those reasons.

we have a gas stovetop with electric/convection ovens. it is the best! love it.

Oh wow, I totally want a gas stove with an electric oven. I didn't know they made them!

But yes, I far prefer gas stovetops. So much easier to regulate the temperature.

My choice is dual as well.

Electric is the best for baking. Gas is too wet you need a dry heat.

Gas is the best for the stove top. Best of both worlds.

Just the safety concerns with gas are enough that I would never ever have it in my house for anything. Leaks, and carbon monoxide being my specific concerns. But I'm in California, and subdivisions here advertise themselves as all electric because it is seen as an advantage here.

We have a couple houses a year blow up here due to malfunctioning gas appliances or leaks.

As for cooking, I did live for 3 years with a gas stove......I just never could cook on the stovetop without burning something, never could regulate the heat like I can on my electric range.

Hmm... I've always had better luck with GAS and baking! :confused3

I was told this when I went to by my last stove. Gas is great though for roast and meat because it is moist in there.

I think it just would take longer maybe. :confused3

Well - I also think there's the thing of just getting to know your own stove.. Without even realizing that you're doing it, you make minor adjustments to work out the quirks..;)

When I bake up here (apartment size elec. stove) I have to do things differently than at my DD's with the regular size elec. stove..:goodvibes
