Electric bill Woo hoo!

I just looked at our bill. We used an average of 23 kwh per day in Sept. (my Oct bill). Last year was 21, when I was much more diligent about turning off the strips to my entertainment centers. So a little less than a 10% increase by not doing it. We just do not use our tvs very often though. Its our computers that get us. 3 lap tops, and 2 desk tops add up :(

Anything with a clock, a remote control, or an AC/DC conversion use electricity even when the power button is off. Something has to be running to accept the infrared signal from a remote. AC/DC power cords are pretty much anything with a box on it, cell phone chargers, laptop chargers, printers.

As far as DVR boxes, I think it took mine like 3 minutes to reboot. We hardly recorded stuff on a daily basis, so it was easy to hit the power switch.

Once you hit the power button to the surge protector you kill all power flowing to the devices. I would think in a power surge, you'd kill the strip before anything reached the devices plugged in.

lol, my bill may be 20 whatever kwh a day.. there was no label, but we have a bar graph as well to compare months from one year to the next and it is so much shorter than last october... and I was overjoyed with the savings. we don't heat with electric, just lights and such. It is much higher in summer with pool and a/c.
we freeze all winter with our forced hot water baseboard gas heat (i think that is what it is called) even though we pay a fortune.
to the poster who mentioned caution about propping fridge, freezer doors open.. yes, that is so scary! I have no small children but we have cats so i will make sure that something sturdy is in place if i have to door prop. I still need to get some baking soda in that extra fridge, so i can finally unplug it. good luck all with your savings . I appreciate any ideas as well.

(unfortunately i had to use my savings to have my laptop de virused. It started getting wacky last time I posted on this thread and now it is getting repaired  )

I posted on another thread not too long ago that we had put power strips on our electronics that use electricity even when they are off. We shut the power strips off at night, and in between uses when it will be several hours of not using those items.
I got the electricity bill today and it is nearly 1/3 less than last october! I don't think it has even been a whole month yet.
Last year in October we used 29 KWH and this October we used 20 KWH. Same amount of people living at home.
I do unplug the coffee maker, keurig and toaster at night as well. I have a 2nd unused fridge/freezer in our empty "guest suite" that I have not unplugged but will do that ....I am worried that it will stink inside if it is off , even though it is clean and empty. And I will add the microwave to items I unplug at night. Hopefully it will be even more savings!
Our elec bill was $101.00 which is the lowest we have had in a very, very long time (years).
I am hoping this will encourage others to give it a try and save $$ and be green. :yay:

I used 960 KWH.

Bill is 131.71 for 28 days in October.

I get up to go in the middle of the night and there are lights on everywhere! TV still on...no one watching....everything plugged in....

Maybe I can cut my bill in half..........
