Electric bill for the month...

My electric bill increased by 30 dollars this month but I haven't touched the thermostat since April. Why would it increase by that much?

If you're on a level pay plan, maybe they did an adjustment. They do that from time to time to avoid large lump sums due surprising people later when they weren't charging enough.

Our monthly bill would be astronomical if we had central air. I’d be comfortable and my husband would walk around in a parka and touque lol
I know mine goes waaaaaay up when the hot weather hits. I should ask my electric company about level billing. Maybe it wouldn't hurt so much every summer if I did that. :)

Yeah, I would say it is hotter so the system had to run more to maintain the same temperature.

I choose pay as you go and not a level pay plan. We live in a good sized house in the Atlanta suburbs. The electric bills in the summer are brutal. I wish they only varied $30. And I shouldn't complain as this home is more efficient than our previous one. It still stings.

We are on budget billing and they do a re-adjustment every 12 months, which causes our bill to either go up or down depending on our average usage. In my experience, they tend to estimate high so the advantage is on their side. If you were breaking even or paying low for the last 12 months, they probably adjusted it to give you a higher monthly payment. If you view your bill, it should give you a breakdown of actual charges and when they last reviewed the payment.

Depending on how high it is, it kind of hurts in the fall/winter. The rental we lived in it was painful. This house is a full $100 less than that one was so after four years of not doing it I signed up this year. Ironically we’re having a very mild summer, it’s only now hitting 100 F regularly. But eh, anything under $300 I’m happy.

curious what your bills are? I know is all relative. we 3000 sqft with basement, no AC and pay about 120 a month.

We pay $280 with equal payments a month we are in BC Canada... every year it goes up a min of $30-40 a month it is insane.. our house is approx 1800 sq feet total including up and down.

Living in Chicago I do budget pay on the gas bill and on the electric bill. Our two seasons are so extreme, I never have to worry about sticker shock.

I personally really like level pay. It makes it easier I feel like in terms of the hit to your wallet each month. But you can still see your usage at least for our electric company so you can tell if you're using a ton one month.

We're on level pay for water, gas and electric.

OP--

1) I would look over the bill to see if there is an explanation
2) IF there isn't an explanation OR you don't understand what you are seeing give your electric company a call and they should be the one to help

There are a lot of things that can make a jump--logically summertime temperatures tend to increase in most places causing higher usage to maintain the set temperature. However things like adjustments in cost per kwh or fees associated with bills, different types of meters installed or how it is calculated out can change it, surge or peak pricing adjustments and even the efficiency of your HVAC system or whatever system you use, new electronics and many other things can increase a bill. A cumulation of those things can lead to a seemingly high increase in bill.

I can't remember from your previous posts but are you relatively new in paying for your own utilities? I ask because I'm not sure if this is the first time you've experienced an increase on your bill and it's got you concerned.

Not adjusting doesn't really save you any money. if you want to maintain a temp and it's hotter out, then your air will be on more to maintain the temp you keep it set at.
If you want your bill to go down, adjust your temp up higher so that when the temp outside raises your AC or C/A doesn't turn on as often.
IN April the average temp here is like 65, it;s July, the average temp is 80. Of course my AC is running more if I didn't change the desired inside temp since April.

We're on the monthly payment plan.....thank goodness. Makes the summers reasonably.
We just entered the summer higher payment months.
It will be 110 today.
I pay $233 this month (it is reassessed every 3 months)......2 story, 3500 sf. Live in AZ

I've done the budget for about 14 of the 15 years I've been in my home. It's usually varied between 130-140 per month

I do budget billing for my gas, but I've never done it for my electric. I may have to give them a call and see how much the monthly damage would be.
