Eisner on Nightline- ABC!

it is time for Eisner to go.

it is time for the whole board of directors of Disney to go.

what they have done yesterday is nothing more than a slap in the face to Disney shareholders and you can be sure that there will be a tremendous reponse coming from Roy Disney, Stanley Gold, and the big institutional owners of Disney stock. the fact that over 40% of shareholders voted against Eisner is historical in that no vote has ever garnered close to that much. further, the 24% negative votes that Mitchell received is likewise extremely high. as Stanley Gold has mentioned, Steve Case stepped down at AOL/Time Warner with a 22% negative vote - Disney just promoted Mitchell for worse than that. the statement released by the board of directors late last night is equally disturbing in that they believe long-term shareholder interests are best served by their actions. shareholders have called for sweepiing changes and the board threw a bone - the absolute minimum that was anticipated.

the fact that Eisner appeared on ABC is nothing more than a marketing ploy for himself. let us not forget that ABC is owned by Disney.

I am certain that over the next few weeks there will be much greater storms brewing with the leadership of Disney. I would not be surprised if Comcast comes in with another offer or if they or another acquirer goes straight to shareholders with a hostile offer.

In reality, Michael has lost nothing.

He is still CEO, and based on the early reports of what Mitchell is saying - and his past rubber stamping of ME's decisions - ME is still in control.

All I can say is this will give those of us in the business schools around the country enough fodder for our management classes, etc. for quite a while.

I'm presuming the other 2 remained as well? Haven't heard everything yet.

Eisner, appearing on Disney's own ABC network in an interview with anchor Ted Koppel, said he planned to stay as chief executive at least until his contract expires in 2006.
Analysts had expected Disney would strip the chairmanship from Eisner, but many doubted that step would be enough to placate investors now
"If they think that is going to be the end, they are kidding themselves," he said.

Slyhubby I totally agree with you. What the Board (or should we say, what Eisner and his thugs) did was an insult to the shareholders' intelligence. And of all people to give the title of Chairman to ... the one that got that second most amount of votes of no confidence. I picture them all sitting around laughing as they announce their big change. Do you really think they believe this will make it all go away? If so, they are in for a big shock!

I have heard that the chairmanship of Mitchell is temporary. They are going to be recruiting a new one. That will take a few weeks.

I agree. I think this move was only temporary, something to show immediately they were reacting to the vote. I hope they realize they need to find a new chair, but I understand it will take awhile.
