Effects of CDA convention?

So the CDA convention is at the convention center the week we are there (May 12-13), but we arrive on the 10th. I am wondering if a convention so big (estimated 30,000) will have an effect on the parks, they are selling discounted tickets and booked a private party in DCA on the 13th. Should we be worried about this?

I just want to point out that the CDA is the California Dentist Association

Thank you, I was trying to figure out what that was. I'm guessing it will not have a huge effect on the parks. Even D23, a specifically Disney convention that is I believe 50,000 doesn't have a huge effect.

I've gone to the CDA convention before and not everyone is in to Disney, like we are. A lot of them will go to DTD, but won't go to the park. I think ashley0139 is right, you probably won't even notice them. :)

The Disney area has events about every weekend, this weekend is goth day and dapper day on the same day. You will never find a slow time

My general sense is that unless the convention/event is actually being held inside the parks (e.g., Dapper Days, Gay Days), the effects aren't really noticeable inside the parks. Large conventions in the area do tend to have an impact on hotel/motel availability around Disneyland, but it doesn't necessarily translate into larger crowds inside the parks. As mentioned there is often an uptick in crowds in DTD and the resort hotels, especially in the evenings (after the majority of the convention activities end).

Just make sure there's nothing in your teeth as you walk around the park and you wont be bothered by the CDA people at all. :teeth:

Haha, I sure won't Scott! Also figment, thanks for the tips! Hotels aren't a problem (already booked), just wish DTD isn't too packed, I love going there after a long day at the parks!

I've been looking at the wait times for some of the rides for the past 2 weeks and some are reaching 70 minutes on a weekday, why is this?

Most conventions usually don't have that much of an effect on park attendance but some of them can really cause local hotels to jack their rates up really high. The NAMM convention is really bad for that.

I have come to DL/DCA every year for the last 5-6 because I am attending the CDA show. In the parks, I noticed more people from the grad night that usually coincide with Friday night of the CDA show, than I do of people who attend CDA (Disneyluvr2 is spot on regarding Downtown Disney though, I see SO many people from the show there).

Ah, but since you have had past experience, how busy does DTD get?

Don't ever go the 3rd week in January, during the NAMM convention!! All the hotels in the area jack the prices way up! I forgot about it last year and tried to book that weekend at the Carousel Inn. We usually pay a little over $100 a night and their rooms were going for $350 that weekend! So were other hotels on Harbor. I called 3 or 4 of them before I realized what was going on. The following weekend, everything was back to normal.
