Effects of 2010 points chart changes

I purchased 255 pts per year at BLT. I did this based on the 2009 chart. By Banking a year and borrowing a year, I would have 765 points which was enough for a Sun-Thurs 5 night stay in a 3 bedroom villa with MK View at BLT during the premium season which is the only time avail for all my family. (according to the 2009 chart), but I was planning for a *** 2010 premium. Now the 2010 chart is out and Sun-Thur points requirements have gone up and I'm going to be ** point short for this trip.

I thought about renting transfered points, but what are the chances I'll be able to get them for BLT so I can reserve 11 months out? I guess I could buy more points but I feel like I already broke the bank with the first purchase.

Any veterans have advice out there?

Some details had to be removed from the above so as not to be construed as a post that is seeking transfer points.

If you are interested in seeking the points, the DVC Rent/Trade Board will be the place to post details for those. But general questions are fine to post here.

Why don't you book one night of your trip on cash? That will solve some of the problem for you and is something many members do. Good luck! :)

Hi, AuntTink!

Will you be traveling during the same season every third year, in the same size room, same view? If so, you may want to go ahead and add 50 - 75 points. That way, you have them, and if the points are reallocated again, you have a little cushion. You could always book a lake view, but if you want the MK view, then I'd add on if you have the money to do so. Plus, Disney may move up the minimum add on, and then you'll be faced with having to add on 100 points or more if/when you do decide to add on. Just something to consider.

If this won't be normal for you, I think it may be hard to rent just 40 points, especially for the next couple of years. It's less than the cost of one night (so the person can't just make a reservation for you), and people can only transfer points in or out once per UY. Most people renting probably won't want to waste their one transfer for 40 points. Not saying it's impossible, but will definitely be harder.

Wishing you the best of luck. I know after spending what you did to buy in, forking out additional money for more points was not in the game plan. :sad2:

1st - sorry I made that mistake in my post.

2nd - Thanks for both your replys. I think I might buy 50 more points. Hope I can still get Feb 2009 use year.

Not sure how many Grand Villas, that BLT will have but do know that even at 11 months depending on what dates you are booking, you might not always get the Grand Villa especially MK view.

Would a studio and 2 bedroom work for you?

If we can't get the grand villa, we would probably go for two 2-bedroom villas.
This would give everyone a bed. Even if we have extra family members come, the teenagers and children can sleep on sleeper sofas with all the adults in beds, I think - I'll have to count up again and look at the floor plans. But we sure would like the grand villa if we can get it. 2-bedroom and studio would not be enough for sure. With two 2-bedrooms we are still 5 points short. The Grand Villa is also nice in that the main living area and dining room are big enough to fit the whole party.

One word of caution. Think about banking and when left over points may expire. If you're going every three years, you may get in a situation where you would lose points, and you don't want to do that.

Again, wishing you luck, and hoping you find a good solution.

I agree. We have gotten stuck in that situation with our AKV points. We ended up with 3 points left haning in space, and they would have just gone to waste. I did find someone to gift one of them to, but I'm still going to just lose 2 of them. I forgot about that little detail when I decided on the number of "every third year" points to buy.

I looked at the chart and looks like you would need 269 pts/yr to get to the 805 you would need. Sounds to me like you would not want to go over the 25 pt mark for an add on. That would give you 280/yr. However, you would have just a couple of points left over from that, and not enough to do anything with (not in premier season anyway). I think I would add on 29 pts that would give me enough for a Fri/Sat night studio so you can stay 1 extra night after the family leaves to "de-family".

We might do the same thing as we are planning a grand villa for my family of 11 (Mom, dad, Sister, BIL, 2 nieces, 2 brothers, 1 nephew, me and dh) in April next year. We bought 300 pts at AKV for the same purpose as you and had it all narrowed down to when we were going to go and everything, then they changed the points, but thankfully we figured it out. Not sure if we will continue to do the Grand Villas in the future, but we are certainly going to test it out. Since my brother only gets my nephew during the school sessions, we may have to change when we go, which would mean lower seasons, which is not a bad thing. That means instead of every 3rd yr, we can go every other year in a grand villa if we stick to Adventure or Choice seasons.

For that exact situation I'd add on the points. Other ways you might stretch the points would be smaller units some years or Lake view some years. I'm always nervous when someone buys either the exact number of points for a S-F OR the exact number for every 3 years, put both together and it's a recipe for disaster IMO. Banked and borrowed points carry far more risk than do current UY points. Hopefully you were aware enough to get a Dec UY so you'd have as much flexibility as possible (assuming you're talking Xmas and Easter). Depending on the UY you ended up with and the exact timing of your trips, it's possible in some cases for a March or April UY you might be able to use 4 years worth of points for a single trip if the trip stretches over your UY. And if you can squeeze out even one night per trip that is not premier time, that will fix your problem without any other maneuvers.

Cash for some nights likely won't work because the 3 BR and MK view are both unlikely to be available on cash. Unfortunately getting points at a different home resort isn't likely to help you in this exact situation, which would be my recommendations for many similar situations. Let us know how you decide to approach it and how it works out for you.
