Eeegads, having second thoughts, book recommendations for 7 year old boy, please

I've heard of that series for years. I'll have to read one some day. Seems like what my son would have enjoyed.

I have a 7 year old son. Right now he is reading the Stink series, the Bad Guys series (which is more like a graphic novel - he loves these books - they were at our school scholastic book fair but the library had them under the award section so I guess they are really good), Captain Underpants, and the Magic Treehouse books which there are like 70 of them!

My son is going into 4th grade and was into the Wimpy Kid series last year, and because the books were lying all over the house my 7 year old daughter got into them as well. I don't know if she totally grasps all the humor yet and probably can't read all the words but the combination of words and pictures helps.

She can read Captain Underpants much better and she also likes the Dog Man series, which is similar.

I wanted to add my two cents in case others read the thread lol ... when I am gifting actual books instead of gift cards to Barnes & Noble I pick "classic" books that a lot of children might not be exposed to anymore ... even if they are above grade level. Things like the original Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Little House on the Prairie.

I am a former librarian and have a 7 and an 11 year old boys. I would recommend Magic Treehouse. I threw out Captain Underpants when my older son got quite bratty after reading it. Joke books and graphic novels such as the Chicken Squad series are also popular.

I also love the Danny Dragonbreath series. Great humor, lots of images, just all around gems. I read them for fun myself.

My 7 year old loves Captain Underpants, as well.

However, I would recommend the Heroes of the Highest Order series. He loved the first book so much that he immediately begged for the other two. And I like the content better.

These were the first two chapter books he ever read, so his reading level wasn't super high at the time. Now that his reading level is considerably higher, he still loves those books.

Everyone’s replies are so interesting. Now I’ll have to start a list for the grandsons that no doubt will soon be on the way

AND looks like there’s a market for slightly irreverent books for the young male reader. Maybe I should write a few myself

My kids aren’t interested in Captain Underpants, but they adore The Dogman series! I also have to recommend The Magic Tree House series. My oldest loved Junie B. Jones.

My son is 7 and enjoys Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We've gotten down DH's old Hardy Boy collection but these seem too difficult for now.

I think this is close enough and I wouldn't overthink it. And better to get them something a bit above their reading level than below.

So many great suggestions. I should have posted my question before making the purchase!

UPDATE The wedding has come and gone so I finally got to meet the kid. So cute and precocious! He was definitely more interested in the pop-up book I got his younger brother. At the wedding I found out he's just going into second grade. My hope is that either someone will read the book to him, as suggested, or he will eventually pick it up. My guess is that there aren't a lot of books at his house, so I'm still glad I went with something to read.
