Now that football season is upon us, I thought I would share my tip for trying to keep those slimy mouthpieces clean.

After DS came down with the cocecychia (SP?) virus at the beginning of football season one year and the doctor told me it came from ingesting dirt, I tagged his mouthpiece as at least part of the reason for the ingestion of dirt. Since that time I have come up with the following solution.

Each evening after practice or a game, I have my son place his mouthpiece into a container that I have filled with a mixture of Listerine and hot water (more Listerine than water). He puts the lid on and puts the container into his helmet. Before the next practice or game, I rinse it off and clip it back on his helmet. (I tried to skip the rinsing part, but DS just does not like the taste of Listerine  )

My other tip is to always keep a new mouthpiece in the glove compartment of your car. You just never know...

I knew seeing all the kids on my son's flag team spitting them out and throwing them around wasn't good. We have to hunt for my sons muthpiece in the grass sometimes. He's only 5 so this is a new experience for him.
