Hello everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with some research I'm doing. A while back, I created some custom DVD inserts for personal use to go along with two of the Walt Disney Treasures DVD's (Mickey Mouse in Living Color and Silly Symphonies) because I felt that the inserts that came with these discs were pretty sparse. Using various sources from around the Web, I assembled some informative pieces that compliment these titles for those interested in learning more (if you want to download them yourselves, there are links at the bottom of this post).

Anyway, figuring I might as well do inserts for the other two releases (Disneyland USA and Davy Crockett), I'm starting to gather info on those (at least before the next 3 come out!). However, I need your help! I've started work on the Disneyland USA inserts, but am stumbling on some "edit" information that was brought up when the discs were released.

Specifically, various message boards reported slight modifications to the DVD versions of the shows as compared to versions that had been taped off the Disney Channel. I've tried to gather the info on these edits, but am looking for more information. Here's what I have so far...

Dateline Disneyland
  • Removal of Mouseketters from parade segment (anyone know at what time on the disc this took place?)
  • Removal of Mouseketters performance of Talent Roundup in the Fantasyland section; don't have confirmation, but apparently there is a point when Mickey & Minnie run up to the doors of the Fantasyland Theater and there is a fade to black. In the original production, they fling open the doors, the Mouseketeers run out and sing their song (is this correct?)
Disneyland After Dark
  • Additions of "don't try this at home" captions during firewalking/handling performances
10th Anniversary Show
  • Shortening of The Tiki Room segment by cutting up "Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing" (where there other cuts made?)
Has anyone had a chance to do side-by-side comparisons of the DVD version with archival copies? Do you know why the Mouseketeer stuff might have been removed (speculation was that it had to do with a lawsuit filed against Disney years ago by Mouseketeer Darlene Gillespie)?

Anyway, any input you could provide would be most appreciative. Thanks for help!

- Steve

This is modern Disney – is there any question?

It’s money.

The segments were removed so that Disney would not have to pay royalties to the Mouseketters and the holders to the rights of some songs. Several of the Mouseketters sued Disney a while ago for breach of contract. They had never been paid the royalties they were legally entitled to for repeat showings on the Disney Channel and for video cassettes. As with everything legal at these days, Disney fought a rather intense battle and lost.

Since DVD’s might be considered a “new” product and so Disney might be liable for more royalties – they decided simply to delete the segments.

Honest question here, are the "Mouseketters" different from the Mouseketeers? If so, what are they?
