Eddie Carroll, voice of Jiminy Cricket, dead

Canadian Eddie Carroll, the voice of Disney's Jiminy Cricket, is dead.
His family revealed over the weekend the 76-year-old performer had died of brain cancer on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Born Eddie Eleniak in Smoky Lake, Alta., on Sept. 5, 1933, Carroll grew up in Edmonton.
A talented actor and singer, he headed to Hollywood on an NBC scholarship soon after high school. He got a start in the 1950s doing voice-overs and spots in TV commercials.
Composer Tommy Banks, appointed to the Senate by former prime minister Jean Chrétien, befriended Carroll while both performed musical theatre in Edmonton. The two travelled to Los Angeles together.
Banks described his friend to the Edmonton Journal as "terrific, funny and enormously talented, obviously. You don't succeed in that business if you're not enormously talented."
Carroll also landed guest appearances in Gomer Pyle, The Andy Griffith Show, All In The Family and Alice.
He later formed Carroll-Farr Productions with actor Jamie Farr, perhaps best known as Klinger from M*A*S*H, creating projects for TV and motion pictures.
Carroll also became known for his acclaimed one-man show Jack Benny Laughter in Bloom.
He came to voice the role of Jiminy Cricket in 1973, replacing voice actor Cliff Edward, who died two years earlier.
For nearly four decades, Carroll was the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney productions including Mickeys Christmas Carol (1983) and Jiminy Crickets Christmas (1986).
