We are taking a 3-day on the Disney Dream in November. Mom definitely needs a wheelchair, but we were wondering if a scooter might be possible.

Does anyone know if they rent ECVs on board the ship?

Also, if she rents a chair on board, is there anything she can use within the port terminal until she gets on board?

Any information is appreciated. We've never rented a chair on board and need as much advice as possible.

TIA!

They do not rent wheelchairs or ECVs on board the ships. You will need to rent from an off-site company. I don't believe there is anything at the terminal.

Are you flying? If so, how will she get through the airports? It sounds as though you may need to rent something at home and bring it with you. You will be able to gate check it at the airport at no charge. It will be brought to the gate upon your arrival at your destination and you will have it to get through the airport, at the terminal and on the ship!

The only wheelchairs available on any of the ships are reserved specifically for passengers who become ill or injured while on the ship. Contact DCL and they will recommend a vendor in the Port area.

Thanks for the information. I'm wondering how one stores an ECV on a cruise ship. They can take up a lot of room, especially since they need to be charged. Those cabins are already very tight. Has anyone had any experience with this?
Thanks.

Mostly I lurk here a lot but recently reactivated my password!!
If you want to use an ECV on the ship you will need an accessible cabin. I have had one of these since I first stared cruising with disney as I am an ECV user. The normal cabin doors are not wide enough to take them and frankly there wouldnt be room inside. I have heard of people who have left them for chanrging outside lifts and indeed seen it happen on the woder. My first dream cruise is at the end of the month so I dont know if not leaving in liftwells is enforced as people shouldnt actually be doing it.
I cruise with a balacony and this cruise am in 9170 these rooms are huge and a balacony you could have a party on dont know if it will be the same size on the dream but its likely.
If you are going to do it and I would suggest you do go back to dcl booking and see if you can change the cabin. I can walk but dont walk long distances and there is no way I would be able to cruise on any vessel (I have crusied other lines) or indeed wdw without the scooter.

You are not required to have an accessible stateroom just because you are bringing an ECV, unless you cannot get out of the ECV to get through the doorway. There are Guests who prefer not to take them (as there will be no tub) and/or they want a category or location that doesn't have them. Guests w/o an accessible stateroom can park their ECV in the elevator alcove and charge them overnight, or they can be brought to Guest Services.---Kathy

However if it hasnt I was told by disney right from the start and this is cruise no 8 that I had to have an accessable staterom

Jacqui- no...you are not required to reserve an accessible stateroom unless you feel that you'd prefer one to be able to get through the door with your ECV or unless you feel that you need the features of that kind of stateroom such as a roll-in shower. I know several people who sail quite frequently that prefer deck 2, midship, in an oceanview stateroom. None of them are accessible, so they leave their ECV on deck 3 at Guest Services to charge overnight. Obviously they are able to take an elevator down one level and they choose a stateroom right off the elevator area so they don't have to walk far. Some people use ECV's due to respiratory or cardiac problems but can walk short distances, and don't need or want an accessible stateroom.---Kathy
