Help-anyone know if we will have time to get to Ft Lauderdale for a 12:45pm flight home to Denver after the cruise. I want to book our flights but want to make sure this timeframe is doable. Also, I read early on on this thread about shuttle from port to Ft. Lauderdale, any info would be great!

Our flight is at 12:30. We booked SAS Transportation as our shuttle service.

GOOD Morning, Happy Cruisers!

I have been looking into renting a car and found that Alamo (MIA airport only) has a free shuttle to Port of Miami.

Also the all electronic toll roads were a bit of surprise this past winter, no cash and hefty administrative charges if you get on without paying for the toll pass. We will most likely pay for the SunPass (Pass24) since we are going to Orlando from the POM.

Many of the rental cars HAVE a sunpass and you can just pay the rental company to use it. We bought a sun pass but we spend at least 3 weeks a year in Florida with car, so it's worth it. It can be updated on line, if one needs to put it in a rental car for temporary.

Yesterday was glorious - low humidity and sunny. We're just about finished the garage project. Today, supposed to go back in the steambath. too bad.

Tomorrow, we're hosting a farewell party at lunch and I REALLY wanted to have it outside, but not in heat and humidity. Guess we'll be cleaning house today and trying to figure out how to fit everyone in.

Happy Day, all!

Big day at our house today. Happy Anniversary to us! 26 years on the 26th of July! :cool1: :lovestruc Pretty cool, huh? Rare dinner AND movie out for just the two of us. I hot hubby a SiriusXM radio and year subscription for his car(he hates his commute to and from the office, hope this helps)

On the cruise front. Finally finished booking airfare :cheer2: And we watched the Panama Canal episode of Modern Marvels on Netflix last night. I had no idea!
Next I am going to go back and reread all the posts about hotels for the night before to choose a place....but I probably won't be doing that tonight ;)

Happy Anniversary! Enjoy your wonderful evening out! We'll be celebrating our 40th anniversary a few days early on the cruise.

We already have our airfare to California and our night before the cruise all booked. We're planning on spending one night in Miami after the cruise to see an old friend, and then heading home on Amtrak. Next Friday I will pay off the balance of the cruise, and then I can focus my attention on my upcoming Canada cruise. After that cruise, I'll just leave a lot of my "cruise-specific" stuff like hair brushes, toothbrush, bandaids and other good stuff in the suitcase since I will be going away to Cape May for three days in October and to Atlantic City for five days in November!

Happy Anniversary! pixiedust: So funny, I bought my husband the same subscription last year for his anniversary present. He absolutely loves listening to commercial-free anything in the car! His commute is 1 hour 20 minutes in the AM, and 2.5 hours in the PM, in lovely LA traffic.

Ugh! I do an hour each way and usually listen to books on CD. I get them from the library.

Where in LA are you? I was around Santa Monica and Sepulveda, but I worked at Westwood and Wilshire, so it was all of an 8 minute commute for me. My husband worked in Santa Monica on Colorado and it would take him about 12 minutes to get into work, but closer to 30 mins to get home.

The traffic is definitely one thing I don't miss about LA!

You were on the Westside!

We're in Ventura County. He commutes to the South Bay/Long Beach area each day, and spends time on the 101 and 405. :(

Happy 26th Anniversary! We will be celebrating our 26th while on the cruise! My DH commutes about 45min each day-to and fro, not too bad. We went to book airfare last night, and it had shot up ~$200 ea person from FLL to Denver, we'll just keep checking. I was once told that Mon/Tues are the best days to find decent fares. Keep your fingers crossed:)

Wow! and I whined when my commute went to 30 minutes, prior to that I lived in the building next door to my office so I had an under 1 minute walking commute.

This makes me NOT want to consider moving to LA. My company just got a huge contract in LA and my head boss is trying to get me to move out there. He even promised my DH and I annual passes to DL every year, I told him if it came with a club 33 membership, he had a deal! He just looked so confused, not a disney fan! I might fly out with him to scope it out soley because he promised me a DL trip if I did but my DH will never leave Delaware and he is killing my career because of it!

DH is traveling this week so I had time to work on the kid FEs. They are finished, not perfect but good enough. I also completed the OE surprise and only got burned by the hot glue gun once!

I started to put together activity books for the kids and found some nice coloring pages and worksheets on Mexico, the Mayan culture, the Panama Canal and Columbia. The kids will def. be learning something on this trip. If anyone wants a copy of some of the pages, let me know and I can email you what I have.

We spent our days at Disney and now we are at Legoland. We are from Texas and my son has commented on the weather here several times. He thinks California is air condtioned. I think it's a little chilly but I am used to 100 degree days during the summer. That said it does look like a great place to live especially with Disneyland practically out you back door. Sherry

Oh my gosh... he goes all the way through LA every day! Ugh. My ex worked with a guy that lived up that way and he would actually go into work at 6:30am to avoid the traffic. He'd sometimes drive down through Topanga to the 1 as well just to stay off the 101 and 405. :rotfl: He also had Sirius ;)

I always said the only bad thing about LA was the traffic (and/or too many people). Other than that, you can't beat it. :rotfl: The weather is great, there's always something to do, and you can always find anything you want....as long as you don't mind driving 30 minutes to a place 4 miles away to get it. The traffic can be managed if you can live close to where you work. When we first moved to LA, it took my husband 30-40 minutes to get into work and up to an hour to get home. When we decided to move, it was worth it to him to increase our housing expenditure to shorten his commute.

Where in LA would you be working? If you'd be up in the Valley or in the South Bay, you could actually find reasonable housing and miss most traffic to boot.

My company would be consulting with the City of LA-Bureau of Sanitation-Wastewater. We normally try to place our office near our clients office. Another issue is that LA has 4 wastewater treatment plants and I would be visiting all of them a lot. Plus there is over 6,500 miles of sewers in LA and I would be out in the field inspecting them.

There will be a lot of traffic issues but at least there is no major national security issues. You would not believe the paperwork you have to fill out and the clearances required to inspect and go into the sewers near the White House, Captiol and National Mall!

I'll send you a PM - would love to have this for the kiddies!

Our company was always recruiting prospective employees to relocate to CA. After about 3-4 days out here, they would refuse the position. Why? Didn't want to sell their beautiful house to live in an overpriced box.

DH will (fingers crossed) soon be moving his office to a new location, on the Sunset Strip. It still involves the daily grind of the 101 and 405, but less time/miles. He is so looking forward to not driving anywhere for our cruise!!!

Yes, we are air-conditioned!!! We are having a mild summer so far.

In that case, take the free trip to DL and turn down the job. :lmao:

While not the same kind of issues as getting permits to inspect, I know LA (and its water supply) is always under constant watch as a target as the second largest city in the US. :(

I even can't imagine. When DH and I stop carpooling, we bought a CNG car just so I can drive on the HOV lane alone. So worth it even with the extra stops for fueling.

You forgot about the earthquakes! That's what DH like to tell people to scary them from moving to CA. He's one of the few who actually was born and raised here.

Interesting! DH and I are both civil engineers working in the same field. DH worked on the wastewater side for many years before transferring to solid waste but I've only worked on our solid waste facilities. If you have to choose one of the plants, go with Hyperion because South Bay is the best! I'd recommend Manhattan or Hermosa Beach but of course, the home prices there are outrageous.

I did some work for NYC and their water supply a few years ago and I would imagine LA takes the same precautions. To bad the trip can't be right before the cruise, that would save me some cash

Looks like I will have someone to speak wastewater with! I am hoping to talk my way into getting a tour of the somewhat newly upgraded wastewater treatment on board. Home prices are insane, no way we could afford to live out there :(. Same reason the DH vetoed my move to DC. Looks like I will be stuck in DE for the rest of my life!

So here is a question for you, rumor has it that it is way easier to get your PE in CA. Any truth in that? Something along the lines that if you fail, you only have to re-take the section of the test you failed.

Congratulations!!

or...South Redondo, near the Avenues/Riviera Village, where DH and I grew up. :)
