I've been visiting with family but DH has been reading and keeping me updated :goodvibes. Count us in for the ornament exchange...is it one participant per cabin or can everyone in your group join in? Are we limiting it at all? If not, all 5 of us will play :thumbsup2.

I love the idea of Christmas decorations...of course, I realized the ship and DL would be decorated, but I really wasn't thinking of our door decor or other Christmasy things (DH will have to have those Santa ears). This is going to be such a blast!

Welcome to the new cruisers (esp. the truly NEW cruisers...what a way to take your first cruise :woohoo:).

Everyone in your group can join in for the ornament exchange as long as everyone in your group brings their own ornament. The more the merrier! Everyone who brings an ornament to the exchange will leave with an ornament.

Never did an ornament exchange before - do we wrap the ornament? Should they be hand (home) made or store bought, cruise or vacation related, or does anything go? Is there a dollar amount we should spend or not exceed?

They can be either home made or store bought but normally I mostly see store bought. My friends and co-workers aren't very creative! Yes, the ornament should be either wrapped or in a gift bag. When a person grabs an ornament for the first time from the pile in the center, they should not be able to see what they are getting. I think anything goes is fine for a theme, that way people can go after themes they like. I would be the first person to go after and try a steal a space themed ornament. We normally set a $5 limit but I know most people use coupons to get theirs under and around the $5 mark. We can do whatever the group wants to do. I'm really flexable.

Okay, for those of you who are unfamiliar with an ornament exchange, I have tried to explain the basics below. I have been told by my boss that I write like a kindergarten and do not follow the 4 C’s of writing, so I am apologizing in advance if this is confusing and unclear. Just let me know if something isn’t clear and I can try to further explain it. If anyone wants to add anything, please feel free.

The ornament: The ornament should be valued as close to $5 as is reasonable. It can be handmade or store bought.
The gift should be wrapped before arriving to the party. Gift bags are OK.

The exchange: 1. Each guest who wishes to participate must contribute an ornament. Everyone sits or stands in roughly a circle around the pile of ornaments.
2. Each participating guest draws a number and holds onto that slip of paper.
3. On the first turn, the guest with paper slip #1 chooses an ornament, opens it, and all admire it.
4. On the second turn, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped ornament (#1's) or choosing a wrapped one. If #2 steals #1's ornament, then #1 must open a wrapped ornament.
5. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped ornament (#1's or #2's) or choosing a wrapped one.
The game continues based on the following:
1. If an ornament is stolen from you, you can steal a ornament (within limits, described below), or open a wrapped one.
2. The turn proceeds until a wrapped ornament is chosen.
3. An ornament cannot be immediately stolen back from the guest who just stole it.
4. The fourth "owner" of an ornament gets to keep it. The gift is "dead" after it has been stolen three times.
5. "Owners" of "live and playable" ornaments must keep them visible and hold them up when requested.
6. The exchange ends when the last wrapped ornament is opened. Usually, guests are encouraged to perpetuate the ornament stealing as long as there are "live" ornaments, but no one is obligated to do this

:thumbsup2 Great explanation...thanks!

That looks perfectly clear to me. Perhaps I think like a kindergartener?

The ornament exchange sounds fun. My mother and I are both in!

I think I may have gotten some great news this morning! My 1st grader's teacher told me that she will be teaching 4th grade next year and that she has requested to have my oldest ds in her class. I have been a little nervous about telling my soon to be 4th grader's teacher about him missing 2 weeks for this cruise. If he gets this teacher, I will have such a huge weight lifted off my shoulders since I know she is very laid back!

It is going to be on day 7 at 2PM, location is TBA. I added the two of you to the list.

The Ornament Exchange information above has been added to Post 79 (Page 6).

Hey all,

Just wanted to get your opinion on something. I found this image on photobucket and added our cruise information. The part that says "Panama Canal" was already there so I just copied the color of that for the personalized part. Do you think the font and color works?

I'm by no means any kind of designer, so I'm just working with the basics of what my photo editing software has.

Thanks!

That's awesome. He will learn so much on this cruise and see things some kids never get to see in their lifetime.

:woohoo: :yay:

Thanks for the feedback :) I was looking for an Art Deco kinda font since that's what the picture reminds me of, but I apparently don't have one on my laptop. :rolleyes1 But if that one works, I'll leave well enough alone.

I spent quite a bit of time today clicking links from the DISigns forum and found all kinds of cute things on photobucket that people have made for other Dis'ers. I figure if I can use something already made for another Julie, I don't have to bug them with a new request. :rotfl:
