I love to read and I really want one. Any thoughts on the cheapest price I can find a good one? I don't want one that is cr@&*y. I don't want to pay $300.00 for one either.

My DH has a Kindle and loves it. I bought it for him for Christmas. I was hopeing he wouldn't like it, and I would inherit LOL. Occasionally you will find a refurbished one in the Amazon warehouse for $200.

I have the Knidle app for my Itouch and LOVE it!! have over 20 books on it. I love being able to read in bed at night with turning on a light so my husband doesn't realize how late I am staying up :rotfl2:

I find lots of free books at Amazon and grab them when I find them.

You can get refurbished one cheap on the Apple website, not sure of the price...

I would suggest you go over to mobileread.com and look over the "Which one should I buy" forum and ask some questions. At under $300 you have some choices but you'll need to consider where you want to buy/download books from and whether or not things like 3G access are important to you.

My wife uses a Nook and loves it. You can do your own research to determine if this suits your needs, but it does cost $260. The cheapest reader I have seen is around $199. However, if you already have an Ipod Touch/Iphone, you can download the app for B&N or Amazon for free. My iTouch has the B&N ereader app and is linked to our B&N eBook account (same one my wife uses for Nook). Thus, we can each read the eBooks on our B&N account on different devices (you don't need to buy the Nook to do this).

I 2nd the ipod touch! I have the kindle app on mine and love it. The screen is smaller than the actual kindle, but I don't find it to be a problem. The touch is so small, fits right in my pocket, and has so many other uses. I don't go anywhere without mine.

If you are looking for a dedicated e-reader - price wise - the cheapest around is probably the Sony PRS 500 series at about $200. The beauty of this one is you can read pdf documents and borrow from your library. This is about the same price as an i-touch and while it doesn't have the flexibility of use that the i-touch does it is much easier to read for long periods of time - the screen is bigger, no backlight to bother eyes, etc.

And although they have the same sticker price the Nook can be had for less than the Kindle. I bought my using a cash back program - I saved 10%. B&N participates in multiple programs and the Nook is eligible under all that I looked at You may also be able to get the Sony using a cash back/rewards program as it is sold at places like Target and Best Buy. Just check around. OTH Amazon does not participate in any of these programs.

That said, price was definitely not a deciding factor for me. I bought the nook because I liked the look and feel of it over the sony and because I liked the fact that it had more document flexibility than the Kindle. I second the website referenced by PP or just google ereader comparison page. All the various e-readers are listed.

I have a sony ereader ps 550 (or 505 forget which) and a Kindle

absolutely love both. We paid about $250 for each (got the ereader on sale and using a coupon through dell, got the kindle right after the new version came out and they dropped their price).

We ALMOST bought a 2nd ereader during Circuit city's bankruptcy sell off as they had them 30% off.

I love both of them, but the ereader has a lot more flexibility then the kindle.

I love the Kindle. I tried both the Nook and the Kindle before buying and the Kindle was much faster. Love the battery life and love the non-glare screen. I download and/or email docs to it regularly. Saves me from having to haul a huge briefcase with me. It's versatile as a book reader and a document repository and saves me from having to boot up the netbook just to read.

I did a lot of research before purchasing asking my DH for one for Christmas. Each has their own bells and whistles that makes it the perfect reader for the one buying it. I chose the Sony PRS 600 or the touch ereader because of the versatility of buying books from various sources and to be able to borrow from my public library. I also like the way it looks and LOVE the lighted cover. The light is built into the cover and you can pull it up and use it in any direction with the reader. The lights for the Kindle and the Nook clip on to the reader itself.

My second choice would be the nook. I like the way it looks and feels. I like that they keyboard on both of the readers is hidden and not on top of it. With the nook, you can share books between others that have a nook which is a plus.

As for the kindle, I did not like the fact that I could not see it and play with it before purchasing it. For the nook and kindle both, I did not like the fact that I could only purchase books from Amazon or B&N.

Having shared that with you, if you have a PC, iPod or iPhone, or blackberry, try downloading the applications for the Kindle and Nook on them and see which one you prefer. Either way, I hope that you find the ereader that works for you. I love mine.

Good luck with your decision.

The iTouch is such a same screen, I can't imagine using it to read. What one has the largest screen?

the new kindle has the largest screen.

The old kindle and the sony ereader screens are a little larger then a standard paperback book.

The pocket ereader by sony is a bit smaller, not sure on the nook size.

The one thing that you have to get used to (and it doesn't take long) is the screen may flash when turning the page. It really was difficult the first few times using them due to that, but after a few days I didn't even notice it (and now over a year later even forget about it)

Just a quick note you absolutely can buy books from other sources for the Nook. I just did it last night and I have done it a good 156 times - that's the number of non B&N books I currently have on my Nook. They are in both epub and pdf format. I read romances and have bought all the above books directly from the publishers - 7 different ones. The Nook handles them with ease.

Thats what I read as well. I get some from the publisher, some from Fictionwise, barginbooks, the library, amazon (for my kindle) the sony ebook store etc..

There are a number of online sites that will give you cash back on your purchases (into an account) to use towards the purchase of other books.

Also, there are lots of free ebooks out there, especially classic novels for ALL the formats.

Thanks for letting me know this. The Nook is my second choice and I look forward to getting one in the future.

I use the Kindle app on my iPhone because I travel a lot for work so it's one fewer thing I have to haul around, plus I'm often reading in dark restaurants. Makes sense for MY application.

goodness I leave for a day and, come home to two pages to read. Thanks for all the feedback. I am going to do some research before I buy.
