ebola concerns

The one thing that concerns me about this Belize story is that it surprises me that Belize is not allowing passengers off the ship. This country relies on those passengers money to keep their economy going. If there is no truth to the story why are they being so paranoid?

They are not allowing that SPECIFIC passenger off the ship. No articles said anything about other passengers.

I have a cruise (not Disney) booked for December that I have zero plans on cancelling. I wouldn't mind if other people cancelled, more room on the ship for me. I'm honestly not worried about this in the slightest.

Hey all,
I am super paranoid I know that!! However with that being said we have our first Disney cruise booked for November followed by a week long WDW vacation. Family and friends are saying I should cancel the cruise and vacation due to the outbreak of Ebola. Is anyone else considering this?

I hope you don't get ebola on your vacation.

The problem here is that when the healthcare workers don't take the proper precautions it can also spread. That Dallas nurse? Turns out she may have had a fever BEFORE her trip and didn't tell anyone. So now that flags both flights. Just saw on the crawl in this morning's news that the CDC is monitoring a contact who is on a cruise ship.

"The problem here is that when the healthcare workers don't take the proper precautions it can also spread" The nurse followed all protocols given to her at the time. The CDC and the hospital have confirmed this.

"That Dallas nurse? Turns out she may have had a fever BEFORE her trip and didn't tell anyone." Also NOT True. She did notify the CDC and they gave her permission to fly. Also confirmed by CDC and the family of the nurse.

Sorry but I am sick of seeing these nurses blamed when it was not their faults. They did exactly what was told of them to do.

and no I am not a nurse or in the medical field.

And I am...and what I was referring to if you look at my post was the aftermath. They were told they were in a quarantine situation. Yes, the CDC told them it was okay. That was the mistake of the CDC. But if I'm contagious I'm not getting on a plane, or a ship, or going off somewhere until I'm darn sure I'm NOT contagious.

They absolutely followed the protocols available at the hospital, and that's not what I'm talking about.

I think I would feel just as safe on a cruise as going to the grocery store. Of course I live in a tourist town and near the ports. We even had a ship in port yesterday from Africa. MY DH has had to handle safety equipment from Africa. At least on a cruise I could get away from most of the general public. I figure IF no one on the ship is sick then that is probably one of the safest places to be. :rotfl:

I'm not as concerned about the cruise as the airplane.

The next few weeks should reveal a good deal of info I think.

I am so confused. So was it both Belize and Cozumel that wouldn't allow carnival to dock?

Health care in Belize is not generally up to first-world standard, at least not in terms of availability, and in many places sanitation is still a concern. (Cholera is still a major problem there.) If the virus gets loose there it will be catastrophic, so they are simply not taking any chances at all that they might have to turn away ALL tourists. Losing one ship is bad but not a disaster, but if they had to close the port entirely they would be dealing with really serious economic pain.

both. it left belize after not being allowed to tender and headed to cozumel. Mexico wouldnt allow it into port either so it headed back to Galveston.

fun times.

it's the fear cycle...those countries are afraid too, wonder if they'd go as far as to order a travel ban for all travelers from the US.... as more comes out the passenger is ~19 days from exposure without any symptoms where incabation occurs within 21 days of exposure b/c Ebola is highly infectious (not to be confused with highly contagious). They were a supervisor in the lab that dealt with the infected samples but that's different than direct care of the patient..

According to reports the passenger is on self voluntary quarantine, which is noble, b/c they don't want to cause others to be at risk, but truth be told they haven't displayed any symptoms and thus not contagious.

the hysteria is only going to get worse... but if you are overly concerned with Ebola I sure hope you've ordered a lot of survival gear for your house b/c how can you even consider going to the grocery store, or sending your kids to school... if you're concerned do your own research and make an informed decision, don' t rely on the media hysteria for your knowledge, especially Fox News ;)

One aspect that hasn't been discussed is that Patient Zero Mr. Duncan while he paid a big price and is the source of all this chaos and fear now... I wonder if we look back one day and tally if he saved more lives then he cost...
think about it, Ebola has been around since the 1970's but until we had the one death on US soil there was minimal investment and public awareness of this, but now $$$'s of extra investment is going into public and private development of cures and treatments....
this outbreak has been going on for a while and no one around the world reacted but now this is mobilizing the most innovative and advanced medical industry/professionals and pharmaceutical industry in the world to fight this finally...
I think it's horrible that people all over and on these boards have to think twice about this but at the end of the day now that we're finally taking this thing seriously hopefully more lives could be saved in the long run

Surely you can't serious

OK, for background...my wife and I are both physicians, and I actively participate in public health.

I would not be the least big concerned about Ebola. Heck, a GI virus like we have seen on other ships would worry me more than that, and I am not all that worried about that either on Disney.

Why they are freaking out on this Carnival cruise makes no sense to me. The patient has no symptoms, had no direct contact with the patient..they are virtually no risk. I still think it was dumb of her to go on the cruise, considering all the fear surrounding it...but the risk is virtually zero.

It's my understanding that she departed on the cruise before there was any confirmed spread of the disease. Before they started watching the health care workers that did have direct contact with the patient.

I think people are freaking out because the mortality rate of this disease is about 70%...and since this virus causes one to bleed from every orifice of one's body, sounds like an awfully painful way to die.

But I too think a lot of this is hype perpetrated by the media. AT least that is my hope.

It is definitely rational to be concerned.

But there is a specific time to be concerned. If a person has had contact with the disease, and is symptomatic (fever, etc), then I would be very worried.

But outside of that window, there is nothing to be concerned about.

I fully agree the CDC should have done a better job tracking these people; and that lab tech on the cruise should never have been allowed to go.

My belief (hope?) is that the govt gets it act together. I don't think they will make these same mistakes again.
