Hi all you ebay experts. How would you ship an item to Canada? I had a person interested in one of my items email me and ask if I would ship to them. I went to UPS website and tried to figure it out and I did find the cost of sending it but I have no idea if customs will cost anything?
I'm looking into UPS Standard takes 7 days for a rate of $10.40. Its a 2 lbs box does that sound right? Any suggestions as to what my other options are? The auction end tonight around 9 pm EST. I told the person interested I would get back to her this afternoon.

Any advice for this new ebay seller?

Thank you,
Lori

The USPS is very reasonable on shipping most things to Can. UPS may look cheap in the begining (although in this case, I don't think it is)..but they charge a fee for filling out the customs papers when they deliver. I was told (no idea if it's accurate) that for one of my items, it was an additional fee of from $10.00 to $40.00 (in additon to any customs fees they may have ot pay depending on the value). I pay USPS $5.50 to deliver the item (1 lb 3 oz) letter air mail. The post office doesn't charge for the customs papers I fill out. They may or may not be charged a customs fee..I"ve not had a client be charged yet. My items go for about $25.00. I fill out the custom form, put it's merchandise and off it goes.

Usually, items coming to Canada via USPS don't cost us extra to receive. It's when a courier is involved (or catalogue shopping  ) that I pay an arm, leg and whatever else I own, to the government. Not to worry, I always assume that costs at the post office on my end are my responsibility....I've just never had to pay anything from what I've bought through ebay sellers.

I was surprised that the first few things I sent to Canada didn't cost that much if anything more. Things going to Ca, Wa, etc. seem to be even more.

I will check the USPS for the shipping cost. Thank you for your help. I'm glad that our friends in Canada will not have to sell their house to receive a package from the US.
If I come up with any other questions I can;t find answers to I will ask you guys again.

THANK YOU.
Lori

Just in case this wasn't clear..the OP was asking about UPS..they are considered a courier, and so the price goes up a lot for most things going into Canada. I find USPS better to use..no extra costs (other than customs fees..not much you can do aboutthose, and the Canadians already know about that.).

Cost of shipping my items do cost more when I'm shipping to Canada..not a lot for the size/weight I'm sending, but it is more...it's usually $5.50 for what I can sent for $3.95 Priority.

I am a Canadian who uses Ebay fairly often to purchase things from Americans.

I can confirm that it is never a good idea to send something
to Canada through UPS ground - UPS always charges the receiver huge extra "transborder fees", often in the region of
$30-50.

The USPS is almost always the best alternative by far. A Canadian receiving a package from the States via the USPS
MAY be charged a $5 admin fee, but usually is not.

I will only deal with sellers willing to ship me items through
the USPS.

On behalf of my fellow Canadians, thank you for your consideration!

Kevin

Thank you for thinking of your Canadian purchaser. :)
I too will only purchase from US sellers who use USPS. I always ask to make sure if I am uncertain of their shipping method.
I once ordered a couple of Disney Buttons for about $5.00 US. The seller shipped via UPS and they wanted almost $50.00 for duty and brokerage fees. :earseek: I had to refuse the package. The seller claimed the value at $75.00 US when they were only sold for $5.00. The other benefit of using USPS is that if you are not home to receive the package you can go pick it up at your local postal outlet.
