EBay Reserve Question

Disclosing the reserve is against eBay policy. That kind of defeats the purpose of the reserve.
That's surprising--it didn't used to be that way. I used to sell on ebay a lot, and never used reserves (in the wii heyday, I started all my auctions at 99 cents and never got burned. I took it as a business risk to start low because low starting auctions ended higher than ones with realistic starting points. The sellers I knew who used reserves disclosed it--there is no point to it being secret, and it turns off potential buyers.

I used to see listings where the seller would identify what the reserve was in the item description.

This is really long, but I think you need it.

You can issue a full or partial refund up to 60 days after you receive a payment.

Here’s how to issue a refund:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Activity.
  3. Click Details next to the payment you want to refund.
  4. Click Issue a refund.
  5. Enter the refund amount, then click Continue.
  6. Review the information, then click Issue Refund.
Note:

  • You can refund payments that are Completed, Pending, Cleared, or Uncleared.
  • To make sure the buyer isn’t credited twice for the same transaction you cannot refund a payment when there’s a credit card chargeback associated with this payment.
  • When you refund a payment, we will retain the fixed fee of your transaction fee. To learn more about variable and fixed transaction fees, click Legal Agreements at the bottom of the PayPal page, click PayPal User Agreement and browse to section 8.
  • If there’s not enough money in your PayPal balance to cover the refund, we’ll issue the refund from your primary bank account.

Thank you SO much for this information.
I just did the refund.

Do you think it is odd that the person who won and sent me the money, never responded back to me either way?

It seems like it has been about 24 hours or less, right? I know I always reply to emails quickly, but not everbody does. Your buyer might be someone who doesn't check his/her email constantly (maybe even only every couple of days or when they are expecting something).

Been buying/selling on eBay for 12+ years now - I refuse to bid on an auction with a reserve. I'm on eBay to find a good deal, not to pay for retail. So if I don't know what the seller is willing to take, I don't know if it's worth the hassle for me to try and win that auction. I never sell with a reserve. If it's something I want good money for, I just start my auction higher.

Thank you. Never heard from them but refunded the money and have it relisted correctly.

Thank you. I knew I should have asked about Reserve here first. I relisted my item and will never use Reserve again LOL
Thank you all!

Back in the last Ice Age, when I first started selling on eBay, a great time to end your auction was on Sunday evening. However, they tended to "do maintenance" on Sundays in the early morning hours, and many, many, many times "maintenance" crashed the entire site for most of Sunday. So, if the site was down and your auction ended, there was no chance for "snipers" or last-minute bids. In those days, a reserve could save you some major misery.

YEah, Sunday evenings used to be good for ending an auction. These days I just make sure my auctions end in the evening, usually around 10PM CST. So not too late for the east coasters, but not too early for the west coasters.

All, another question. I did my refund through ebay but it still shows that I sold that item and the amount of money I received, which Im guessing ebay will want from me as the fee.

^^It should eventually show as "refunded" or something like that. You should be refunded your fee.
