I have listed a couple of items on ebay and they show the credit card symbol by the paypal payment option - I will take paypal and since the credit card symbol is there I guess I will upgrade to the business account if I have to so I can accept them. Is there a way to take that off for the future? And once I upgrade to a business paypal account can I turn around and downgrade later?

Thanks!
Amanda

Amanda, I don't think you can downgrade once you go to a business account, but I could be wrong and you will have to pay the fee for the creditcard whether your buyer uses a creditcard or not..

The part I do know about is the logo in your ads. I hope I can explain this without confusing your further. If you don't accept credit cards you can't take the option of accepting PayPal when you are submitting your ad. You just state in your ad that you will take non-creditcard PayPal. Make sure that line is large enough for them to see clearly in your ad.

Paypal won't allow you to downgrade. I know, I tried it. I've had paypal for quite a long time now though.
Paypal will only allow you to accept payments up to a certain dollar amount. After you reach that dollar amount paypal will not let you accept any more payments until you upgrade. That's just one more way to charge you fees.

To downgrade you have to cancel your account and open a new one.

Thank you so much!! That sure is tricky of ebay and paypal to do it that way though. I guess this time I will just keep my fingers crossed that the winning bidders are willing to use paypal without a credit card. If they submit payment using a credit card and I only have a personal account what will happen? I mean I will email the winners and ask them to not use a credit card - but since that logo is on there I wouldn't fault them if they did. And I guess I would just upgrade. I guess one good thing is that I don't ebay on a regular basis. Just when I have something to offer that I just can't bring myself to give away or donate, etc.

You can have 2 PayPal accounts. One that accepts Credit Cards and one that does not. You have to have 2 email addresses and 2 bank accounts. It can be confusing to the buyers, but I offer credit card payements only through one PayPal account. Sometimes I have to reject the payment if it goes to the wrong account and ask them to pay though the other account. Since I have my non-CC paypal account as the default this happens about 20% of the time someone uses PayPal. I try to make it clear on my emails, but some people still miss it. Everyone has been very understanding so far.

Thanks Robin - that is a great idea. I may do that.

If you are not going to take credit cards, don't have that logo in there. I learned that the hard way. Even though I listed that I didn't take credit cards, people didn't read. I will tell you, though, that my selling on ebay does so much better if I'm willing to take credit cards. I usually avoid the ones myself that only take a money order or cash from paypal. I don't leave money in my paypal account. I have a credit card that I use only for shopping online, and I pay it off every month. Unless it's an item I really really want, I won't bother. If you are bothered about the fees, just be sure to add 50 cents or so to your shipping total. A lot of people figure in some of the fees in shipping to cover the costs of paypal and ebay.

I just started e-baying this past weekend, so I could be wrong, but I thought uping your s/h fees to cover paypay/ebay fees was a no-no?

It is against ebay rules to tell someone that you are going to charge $5.00 for shipping, and if they choose to pay with paypal they have to add an extra $1. There is nothing wrong with saying that shipping is $6 and having part of that $6 be figured to cover the cost of paypal, ebay, packing materials.

Well - I would rather avoid additional fees. But I just think it's kind of stinky of ebay to only offer the accept paypal button with the credit card logos. I myself will purchase when I can use a credit card over when they aren't accepted so I understand it. And I have probably been a "bad" buyer before because I assumed if the picture was there they accepted them - of course I have never had anyone tell me otherwise so maybe I haven't been.

I am planning on begining to sell on e-bay soon. Right now I'm reading EVERYTHING I can so I don't run into any problems. I would like to learn from your experience so I don't inadvertantly set up my account in a certain way and then not be able to undo it.
Could I ask when this "accept paypal button with the credit card logos" appeared? Was it during the process of setting up your account?

One of the areas for selling in your listing is what payments you accept. If you put paypal they put that in your listing. It will have the Paypal logo with the credit card symbol. But, I have to say again that I sell sooo much better since I started accepting credit cards. It makes up for the charges. I'm sure that most people on here who have tried both would tell you that.
