Three weeks ago I sent out a check for an item I won. Two weeks ago the check cleared. I have yet to receive my item. The seller "says" he sent it out last Saturday. Now, it that is true it has been a week since he mailed it and I haven't received it. What is my next step?

The key is how he shipped it. If it was First Class Mail or Priority Mail, you should have received it by now, but delays do happen. If he sent it Parcel Post or Media Mail, that can take a lot longer.

I did too much shopping in Boston a year or so ago and shipped home some boxes Parcel Post. I went in and tried to file the insurance on one of the boxes because it had been way too long. They persuarded me to wait a few more days, and it did finally show up.

Ask the seller if they used a service that you can track. If they did, they probably would have already provided the tracking number.

A word of caution: I had a similar thing happen a couple of years ago and, after MANY emails on the subject, I ended up getting stiffed (AND I paid for insurance!). The seller just quit replying to any emails, did NOT refund my money, and never pursued the insurance. I really did not understand e-bay well then and did not leave negative feedback (hoping she'd finally come through on her promises, until it was too late to leave feedback).

Now, I wish I had been more aggressive. So, while it's true that the item may indeed take a good few weeks to arrive, you don't want to wait too long to take steps to get this resolved.

Good luck,
Took

I ship many things on ebay and while most of them get to their destination in a decent time frame. During the holiday season (specifically November-December), I've noticed that packages can take significantly longer if sent via parcel post. I shipped an item on 11/1 and my buyer just received the item on 11/17/ This is unusually long for the post office but because of the larger volume of mailing during these months it is possible that items take longer to receive at this time of year. For items that I will be selling on ebay in the near future, I will be offering priority mail to ensure that buyers are receiving their items quicker.

The main thing for buyers/sellers to do in situations like this is keep in constant communication with each other in regards to the item.

Thanks for your responses. I am getting concerned that I will not receive the item. At the same time I purchased this item I also won three other auctions for various things. All of those items arrived very promptly. I'll keep in touch with him and hopefully it will be here soon. Thanks!

What is his feedback like? If he has a lot of positives, then I'd wait a while before doing anything.

You can request contact information which sends an email to both of you with BOTH of your information provided. This usually is enough of a persuasion to get a buyer or seller to get going on the item. I've had some slow payers in the past and once i request that contact info , they are afraid they'll get a call from me, they seem to pay right away. Maybe it would work that way for you and they'll mail it out. Or you could actually make the call to them. You could try filing a dispute with Square Trade but I've heard they're not much help. There is also purchase protection on items up to $200 but there's a $25 transaction fee.

Happy to report that the item did arrive yesterday! The seller had written the wrong zip code! Anyway, it did arrive and all is well now. Thanks for all the advice.
