Ok enlighten me, I sold something on ebay, person paid thru paypal. I mailed said item. Get email last night from paypal saying buyer said he never authorized payment. So , they are holding my money and I might be out my money plus the item I shipped. I needed to send proof that I shipped item, but not sure if the reciept is good enough from post office, all it says to shipped to zip code xxxxx. So how does someone bid, pay and now say o..wasnt me?? I cant magically make up his address and bank info...any thoughts?:confused3

Did you ship to the authorized address (through eBay/PP)?
Did you get a tracking number?

If the answer to both is yes, you will be protected by their Seller Protection policies. If the answer to either is no, you are indeed out the money.

argh...I shipped thru address.so I am good on that, but I only mailed it media mail and didnt get a tracking number. So even if I have a reciept, that wont count? I did send the ebayer a message and asked to have the item returned, doubt that will hapeen though.

You made the easiest and worst mistake, ebay requires you to provide tracking. Its the onlu proof you have it reaches its destination.

Has the buyer left feedback for the transaction? That's the only proof you'll get that he got it.
Secondly, that type of thing happens to every one. We had it happen even after the buyer left positive feedback. Email the buyer through ebay and tell him you got a notification from paypal, if they respond back with that there's nothing wrong with their paypal account, call paypal. They'll go over it and release the funds. I wouldnt mention to the buyer you didn't include tracking because that can open another can of worms. Hopefully it was a small enough item that you can eat the cost and chalk it up to lesson learned.

Now if this is your first time selling, paypal does hold your money for up to 21 days. But thats a new seller "protection" BS. You cant do anything about it.

No not a first time seller, have sold alot of the years.. I shouldve known better, I do tracking and delivery confirmation on bigger items, but the item went for 33.00 with free shipping, didnt want to spend more on confirmation . I did email the person, lets see if he responds. Might have to chalk it up to lesson learned, but im sure he meant to order it, and if not he should be honest and arrange to have item returned. thansk for everyones advice.

I'm a little confused. The buyer is claiming he/she didn't authorize the funds? Are they the ones who bought the item thru ebay, and then paid thru paypal? Did they have a confirmed mailing address and does their account show as 'verified'?

If so, then how in the world would paypal have been able to tell you that the item was paid for , showed as paid for on the ebay page, and sent you a paypal receipt, since the buyer never 'authorized it"? The seller would have to have a bank account or credit card on file with paypal. And that same buyer would have had to click a pay now button, enter their password on paypal and complete the transaction, or you would have been notified before shipping the item. Try calling paypal and explain the situation and see what they advise.

This sounds more like a case of buyers remorse, and you may be out the money since you didn't provide a tracking #. But that doesn't always prove who the item went to either.

I bought something awhile ago, paid thru paypal, seller claimed to have sent item with delivery confirmation, even sent me the number. Problem is, item never arrived here. I filed a dispute with paypal, after looking up the so called delivery confirmation #, which did exist, except that it showed the item had been delivered to CA, and I live in MD..Paypal immediately refunded me my money. Seller attempted to leave me negative feedback, I filed the same information with ebay as I had with paypal, and they removed the feedback immediately

Hope the situation turns out ok for you! But if it doesn't..make certain to add that buyer to a BLOCKED BIDDERS list, so they can't do it to you again!

That 19 cents for delivery confirmation (when you print your label thru eBay) is the best money you'll ever spend.

You are correct that the receipt is worthless.

I have a high ticket item that I am going to be sending out soon. I know enough to send to a confirmed address with Paypal, and to only send to the address that is on the transaction - which should be he confirmed address. I will be having it insured. And I will have it sent with SIGNATURE confirmation. I will be using USPS Priority mail.

Anything else I need to know/do to ensure that they can't state it was never delivered? And for Paypal to authorize a chargeback?

The last time I sold on eBay was 10 years ago, according to my feedback. This was way before any Seller's Protection. I have made other transactions with Paypal since then - sending & receiving money. Do you think they will be holding my money for 21 days?

How high end?

Anything over $249.99, I would not use USPS. I would take it to the UPS store, have them watch you pack it, talk to the guy, get a receipt, etc. Perhaps purchase insurance. And yes, signature confirmation.

I would watch the tracking number every day and the minute it shows as "delivered" contact the buyer to say, "I see you received it, just want to be sure everything is perfect and you are happy."

If you follow PayPal's rules to the letter, the only circumstances under which they would issue a chargeback is if a buyer claims SNAD, fraudulently. And they do that! For example, recently I sold a portable DVD player, case, cables, etc. I know the player was in the box and you can tell by the weight. The buyer claims everything was in there except the DVD player. Honestly, he's lying. So people do pull that "empty box" scam still - but I've been selling since 1998 and this is literally only the second time someone has tried it with me.

I don't sell anything over $249 any more or sell anything internationally. Too many headaches.

I don't know about them holding your money. Maybe?

The item is more than double that price. But, USPS says you can add insurance up to $5,000???

As for UPS, I've heard many stories that they leave things a couple houses down the street, behind trees, etc, when they don't get a person answering the door. And sometimes they will just fill in the signature confirmation themselves. I can't have that. :headache:

Ok, the address shows as confirmed, but says sender is unverified. I think for sure this was lesson learned, am I supposed to tell all buyers if they are "unverified" they cant buy? Thought I just had to worry about confirmed address.

I have to learn how to print my label thru ebay, I still just write labels and go to post office

It's not that difficult to print shipping labels at home, pretty much everything is set up that you just click through it. The only thing you do need is a scale that can do ounces and pounds. Anything under 13 ounces can go first class which is faster than media or parcel, usually only a day longer than priority.

Verified only means that the paypal account has been linked to a bank account and verified. It doesn't mean anything against the buyer. But do only ship to confirmed ebay addresses.

Paypal is the one holding your money, it has nothing to do with the buyer, and they are usually unaware of paypal doing it. Like I said, it was just a week or so ago this happened to us. They did it after the buyer left positive feedback for the item. Sent an email to the buyer, they said all was well, then called Paypal and they lifted the hold. They do it randomly for stupid reasons and usually just to cause unnecessary headaches.

Any high price item, I think over $500 you can ship with the USPS with registered mail. That is what allows you add insurance up to $5,000 (but you can't insure cash). It's $12 for any piece of mail, international or national. It also comes with signature confirmation, and provides tracking every point along the way (much like UPS) even when it goes over seas.

I've also had the Post Office deliver a package without a signature. My bf had to send me a laptop because mine died. I made him ship it priority with signature, and it was still just left on the door step. My aunt even heard the guy walk up to the door with no attempt to ring the bell or knock. The Post Master was not happy when I went to complain.

If you have a postal scale it is quite easy. Select print shipping label enter the weight and that's pretty much it.

You need delivery confirmation on everything. Recently I've had 2 unauthorized claims on ebay for $15 items. With the delivery corn duration number I win those cases.

I know what you were saying ... love autocorrect!

That. had. better. not. happen.
I know they are slammed at Xmas time. They don't want to go back again. They have probably hired extra carriers. They just need to do it RIGHT. :headache:

Okay, so far I am going to send registered mail, insured & get signature confirmation & tracking.

Does the eBay labels have tracking? If I do registered mail, will they still use the tracking on the label?

Also, in order to get my money OUT of Paypal, do I need to add a bank & get verified? How long does that take? Right now, I only have a credit card registered with them. Can they just send the money to the credit card?

And momtojandj, thanks for letting me piggyback my questions onto your thread. :flower3: The eBay/Paypalers were already posting on this thread. :)

Ebay automatically selects tracking on their print shipping label page. Registered Mail must be done in the Post Office, it's the only down side to it. Registered mail already has built in tracking and signature confirmation, no need to add it on. There's a little form you fill out, and there's a number that will be printed on it. You'll enter that number in the tracking field.

If you ship with ebay/paypal, they will automatically add the tracking information to the sale and notify the buyer. If you ship with the post office, you must add the tracking information manually to the sale.

You have a couple options for any money in your paypal account. You can spend it online with any retailer that allows for a paypal payment. You can link it to a bank account and transfer the money, it does take 3 days to do so. You can also sign up for the paypal debit card to use the money. The downside to it is, they automatically charge a $1 for any ATM transaction plus any fees the ATM charges.

Linking to your bank account takes about a day. They make two deposits in a very small change amount, and you must verify the amount on paypal. Then the three days for the transfer.
The debit card took about a week to receive. It's like any other bank card with a mastercard logo. I normally buy something at the grocery store and get cash back when I need money out of it.

Thanks for all the info. :)

As it turns out, I may sell it on Craigslist instead. Someone screwed around with my auction yesterday. He actually seemed like a good Buyer, high feedback. But, he retracted his bid after it got up to $500. Then the next highest Bidder got skiddish and retracted his bid since his highest bid was revealed. (Plus the item never really would have gone for that low.)

I did some sleuthing and it turns out that the first Bidder had bought the exact same item 2 weeks ago! That person had listed NO returns. I think something was wrong with the item, and that Bidder possibly thought that he could swap out my item and say mine isn't the one working.

Even if that wasn't really the situation and it's just my imagination, sending off a $600 item and possibly getting a SNAD and Paypal charging back the amount is just not something I want to risk.

Plus, I've been getting some really WACKY emailed questions about the item. It makes me wonder WHO the heck is out there on the other side of the computer bidding on this??? Too much can go wrong. :sad2: Item is too high of a price for that.

I think I'll take my chances with an in person meet - at a very public location to do the sale.
