When did they start requiring your to collect sales tax for your state? I haven't listed in about a month and now it won't let me list unless I put in the sales tax rate for NJ. This is starting to become more trouble than it's worth. I only sell stuff I have laying around the house.

I never "have" to put in sales tax. I put it in for my business items and don't for my garage sale items. Ill it let you put in 0 percent?

This has always been a state law. I'm not sure how Ebay handles it.

And here's a hint.. If you put it in and collect it you MUST remit it to the state. Penalities are HIGH for collecting and keeping! LOL (And folks do this!)

I'll try putting in 0 and see it if takes it - thanks. I really don't want to have to worry about sending in sales tax to the state.

Nope - it says I have to put in a valid percentage. I didn't check the box to have it added to the total so maybe I'm ok.

I never filled this in before - is it new for the 1st of the year?

Check your opitions, my are set to say I do not charge sales tax. I listed something today and never had that problem. We will see in the future.

In some states you don't have to collect sales tax (and remit it to the state) for occasional sales, but the definition of occasional sales versus proliferous sales is open to interpretation by the "tax man".

If you store stuff for sale in another state or sell from a vacation home in another state, you have to collect sales tax in behalf of that state also.

Also, tax is only collected on in state sales unless as Seashore mentioned you have some type of "legal presence" in another state.

If you have turned this into a small business. (ie. buying and reselling on EBAY) you might want to talk to your local dept of Revenue. If you get a tax number then items you buy for resale can be purchased tax exempt.

My thoughts are that if you are selling "junke" from within your own house it's probably not going to get your local tax man's attention. If you have a "store" then maybe....

I checked options and nothing is checked. Oh well - I guess the chances that I'll sell it to someone in NJ is slim. My usual buyers are out of state.

I just posted 8 auctions about 30 minutes ago, and I didn't have to check anything for sales tax (I'm also in NJ). Maybe it's the category or something?
