eBay advice needed - selling "princess gowns" on eBay?

For our recent trip to WDW (DD and I got back yesterday), I made 2 "Princess gowns" for my DD to wear, one to PSB and the other to Cinderella's Gala Feast. We received many compliments on them from guests and CMs (including several of the princesses :)). A few people asked where I got the dresses and, when I said I'd made them, they said I should sell dresses like this on eBay.

I'd never considered such a possibility - mostly because I am very new to eBay so hadn't thought of that as something I might be able to do to earn some extra money. However, now that the seed of an idea has been planted, I'd very much like to see if this would work.

First, though, I want to ask the eBay experts here for some help. How do I search for comparable items to see how they're selling? Are there specific keywords or categories that I should try?

Also, please tell me honestly if you think these are the kind of items that would sell. I'd hate to get excited about the possibility only to have auctions end with no bids. Of course, I'd need to at least cover the cost of materials so would make sure to set a reasonable starting price. However, I'd also want to make something for my time (the point of making such sales, really). How much do you think dresses like these might get?

What's the best way to sell something like this? Do I make the dress in a specific size and sell it or do I make a "sample" to show in the listing and indicate I'd make one in a size the winning bidder specifies within a specific size range?

While I probably wouldn't try to sell the dresses I've made for my DD to wear, I did think I'd give some information on them to help as a reference for the kind of dress I would plan to sell.

This first dress is an irridesent white fabric with an underskirt of 3 layers of tulle in pink, green and lavender over white satin. It's trimmed with pink and lavender ribbon roses as well as irridescent sequin "braid".

psbzoeprincess.jpg

(BTW - My DD wasn't being very cooperative when I took this photo so I'd work with her a bit to get a better one for an eBay listing. :))

The gown my DD is wearing in my sig is made from gold tissue lame (sorry, I don't know how to add the correct accent so it looks "lame" :)). The overskirt is a tulle with a gold pattern trimmed with gold ribbon at the hem (unfortunately the gold pattern of the tulle doesn't show in this photo but I would take close-ups of such details for an eBay listing). The bodice has gold braid trim with a quilted inset. The sleeves have tulle ruffles edged with gold ribbon that overlay lame ruffles edged in gold braid.

Both gowns were worn over a petticoat that helps to give the skirts their shape. I did it this way so I wouldn't have to use double the amount of netting, lace, etc. if I made it part of the dress itself. For ones I'd sell, though, I don't know if it would be better to make the dress with the petticoat attached or specify that a petticoat was worn in the photo but not included as part of the item up for bid.

Thanks in advance for your advice and comments!

Those dresses are absolutely incredible! If I had seen them when my oldest granddaughter was little, I would have bought both of them in a heartbeat, but she's a grownup eleven now and her little sister isn't the "princess dressup" personality.

I am a doting grandmother, so I don't want to even try to talk prices with you. I just wanted to tell you how beautiful they are!

Those are absolutely beautiful!

I just sold a halloween costume on ebay for my neighber, it was Pikachu (Pokemon anyone?), we started the bidding at 9.99 and it ended up closing at $52! We werre excited because it cost very little to make, so she more than covered her costs. Which is the point I'm trying to make, I think that you need to look at your actual supply costs and the cost of your time. What are each of these worth? Use that as a starting point and see what happens!

Btw, we did have someone request that we make one for them, to fit their much older child. So maybe your sample idea would work!

Good luck!

The dresses are lovely. Your daughter makes a beautiful princess. I saw your sig line in another thread and wondered where you got it or if you made it. I wish I could sew like that.

I think they would sell well. I would put one on as a trial.

I notice that people use the word "boutique" to describe similar dresses, both handmade and factory produced. Here is a link to some closed auctions:

Boutique Dresses

I think your dresses are better than any of those. You can do a completed search for "princess dress" and it comes up with 1200 results. you can skim through those. I have seen dresses similar to yours before and they were getting around $75.00. I can't find any now and am probably doing the wrong search. I would start the price low and use a reserve if you are worried.

Maybe put something in the auction about the compliments she received from the princesses. The auctions with accessories seem to go higher. If the dresses sell and you make more, maybe add a few small accessories? Hair bows or gloves? Or, a matching drawstring bag if the auction is close to Halloween. We went to MNSSHP last year and DD was Tinkerbelle. DMIL made her a matching irredescent green drawstring bag for trick or treating. It was perfect!

Have you thought about craft shows and such? I know they charge a table fee, but people willingly pay for unique, quality items. You could also advertise in a local paper as a costume/dressmaker perhaps, especially if you could advertise a website so they could see your work. I'd print up some business cards (buy a pack at Walmart and print them on your computer). Take them w/ you. Let DD wear the dresses and hand out a card to anyone who asks! I'd also try to advertise as flower girl dresses for weddings!

Search e-bay for costumes, girls dresses, etc. I'd give it a shot and do a test run, esp. now that people are shopping for Halloween.

They look beautiful! I can sew, but only the easy stuff. I am so jealous!

I guess I need to add up the material costs as a starting point. For these 2 dresses, I only bought some of the materials recently as I had bits a pieces to use from past projects (completed and planned but never executed :)). I think the materials to make the gold dress might run $25-$30 and a bit more for the white one. Of course, most of the fabric was purchased on sale so I might be underestimating the full cost.

After looking at some of the completed eBay auctions, I'm even more uncertain about this project. I'm pretty budget minded so wouldn't be willing to pay much myself for such a dress. On the other hand, I'm not sure I would get enough to cover much more than the materials especially when I see some dresses (probably factory made, though) that are very nice only go for about $30. Of course, I also saw some princess costume dresses at WDW and TDS priced at $85 and I'm sure they get it. I think I may try one to start and see how it goes.

Please keep the advice and comments coming. Since I've never sold anything on eBay and only recently even started to buy, I'm very appreciative of assistance from those with more experience.

I'm sure you could sell them....especially around Halloween. You have to fiqure out how much $ you have in each one regarding time and materials, then see how much you can sell them for.
By the way, they are gorgeous!!!

The dresses are absolutely beautiful.

I have never sold dresses on ebay.
I would also concern on the listing price if the material alone costs $25 to $30. May be it is me, I went to ebay about a year ago to look for similar dresses and I consider $35 to $40 as expensive :-). In your case, if you were to add your time and shipping, what is a fair price of the dress for you?

However, is it possible to use cheaper material? and will it be cheaper if you were to make 2 or 3? How much time do you need to make a dress? can you test the water using the existing dress? If it does sell, you can make another one.

Can I have your # for when my DD gets bigger? She isn't born yet, but I am sure she will love to be a princess!!princess:

To be perfectly blunt, it doesn't matter what YOU would pay for an item, it matters what others will. For example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=57878&item=8133661746&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=57878&item=8131380134&rd=1

I think these overalls are cute (well, some of them!) but I would never, ever, ever pay that much for a pair of decorated jeans!! But these sellers can go to Old Navy, buy a pair of $15 overalls, add $5 worth of fabric and sell them for $375?? That is unreal. And it happens over, and over, and over again! I have zero talent, and never could make anything remotely like what you or any of the "boutique" sellers do on ebay. But there definately are buyers out there!!

One thing I would suggest is to try to hook up with one of the "groups" of boutique designers. There are the "Stichinchicks". the "Boutique Betties", ODOD...I know there are more, but I don't know all the names. Basically, these groups work together so when you search, you come up with all the boutique auctions the members have listed. I have zero clue how to do this, but I am sure if you search, you can email someone and they will help you.

Good luck! And let us know how it goes!

they are truly beautiful. the only concern I would have is that Im not sure if you would make more than what it cost for your materials. Mil and I talk all the time about her selling the clothing she makes for my dd but when we run the numbers- we find that she might just break even and she said its not worth it than. anyhow- I would just research the auctions and see if any boutique dresses are being sold & what they are going for and than decide. Im a sucker right now for the boutique overalls for dd but I havent spent more than $35.00 on a pair. Good luck.

WOW ~ the dresses are stunning (ALMOST as beautiful as your DD, of course :D ).
i've seen the "deluxe" costumes at DS (cindy & last year's aurora) used for flower girls & x-mas photos.

you might want to use certain keywords in your descriptions:
wedding, party, christmas, unique, custom, elegant, & communion (for all-white dresses).

flower girl & communion dresses do command higher prices than "just costumes". just by using certain terms, the prices tend to escalate.

also, vary the keywords & items by season, e.g. ~
christmas: "dress your princess in elegance for the holidays"
early spring: "a dress worthy of your angel as she receives her first communion"
halloween: "your daughter will be the Belle of the ball" (your dresses are too nice to be considered costumes tho, IMHO)
wedding (anytime): "unique beauty for your special day"
etc
search completed auctions, check prices they closed at, note terminology used.
good luck!

OMG!
Those dresses are BEAUTIFUL! You should be very proud of yourself. I am not a sewer by any means but I keep looking for something like that to try and do for my daughter. She wants to work on a project like that together.

Your DD is so beautiful and proud standing there in those dresses.

Simply stunning LisaZoe!!! And of course, your DD makes a beautiful princess - what a doll she is!

I'd give it a go and see what happens. I don't know what you are planning, but it seems to me that the "boutique" auctions usually are for an order of whateve size the winning bidder wants rather than a specific size. That way you could just post the first couple with pics of your DD then go buy materials after the close of the auction (or when you see a great sale!) LSchrow has some great ideas for words to use, I definitely would include the word boutique and some of the words she described to really describe these gorgeous dresses...they are, IMHO, way more than just a mere "costume". When I saw your creations my first thought was at least $75-$100 each. Personally, I'd start bidding at whatever your cost is...plus then you have the perception thing, if it starts too low then people may have the impression that they're not worth as much...but then again you don't want to start too, too high, then people won't bid. But honestly, if the starting bid was around $35 or $40 for a custom made dress I would bid in a heartbeat if I had a DD.

Ooh, the other thing I just thought of...they're just opening a World of Disney Store in NYC that has a new Princess Royal Court "show" (forgive me, I'm sure there's a snazzy name for it that escapes me now...) Think of the princesses that would look fabulous attending that in one of your creations!

Good Luck! Keep us posted on what you decide to do. :)

You might want to list them as pageant dresses as well. A colleague pays $250-$350 for custom pageant gowns for her toddler.

Since I occasionally do costumes for people. These dresses are incredible and I think would even sell as Pageant dresses (which in the south is HUGE money!

Those dresses are beautiful!

I was considering paying someone to make the McCalls Cinderella dress for my DD (not sure of the pattern number) which is not as complex as these dresses. She wanted $50 (not counting materials). Just to give you an idea of what others charge.

You are very talented!

It's funny but I saw your dresses on another thread and I remember wishing that you would sell them. My neice loves princess stuff and they would even make beautiful flower girl dresses. I would much rather spend money on a hand made quality dress than a store bought one from disney.

PS. Your daughter is adorable!

Hi, LisaZoe,

I am a Silver PowerSeller on Ebay--and I have a few tips for you.

First, you can never have too many pictures when you are selling beautiful costumes like these...so take plenty, and be creative in your photos--maybe have one with your DD just gazing out the window in her princess gown, etc.

Next, use an auction template to jazz up your listings. Original auction templates can be found on Ebay (yes--people sell those too!) Use one to make your work stand out from others, plus it just looks professional!

Next, in order to make sure you cater to the customer--allow them to "customize" on certain aspects of the costume--people like that word--custom or customized. You could let them know in your listing that you can make the dresses in several colors, or with different trim for example.

Next, count the costs! Make sure you know every penny that is going into your dress, plus the costs of listing the item, and most importantly, include your time and labor as well! Then try to double it! In business talk--that's "keystoning" Please make sure that you set a reserve price--at least for the first several dresses that you sell! The reserve price means that you will take no less than that price for the dress (the buyers do not see this number though)

Last--have fun!! These dresses are beautiful, and I believe that you have awesome talent that you can share with others--plus make extra money!

Also---do not give up!!! Keep trying to see what works--but I guarantee if you keep working at it--they will sell, and possibly bring in lots of extra cash for you! I started out small with around 10 listings--now I have 250--so go for it girl!!

My sister has bought from that seller in the past. There is a lot of time put into making those overalls and the quality is excellent. That's why they go so high.
