Eating Out

Just recently cut as much fast food as possible. Was eating fast food everyday for lunch and at least once a week for a quick supper. Now down to once a week, maybe.

Sit down restaurants, depends on the month. Anytime there is a birthday or Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, we eat out with one or two or all three of the kids. Dh and I eat out at least once a month. And we meet Dd and sil for dinner at least once a month. Both of those are in addition to the birthday or holiday meal. So two-three times a month. And it’s usually steak, hibatchi, bbq (one of two places) or seafood (one of two places). It’s gotta be good and it’s gotta be something I either can’t cook or quality matches or surpasses the price.

Not very much anymore. I grow herbs and some veggies, including ones that are hard to buy fresh, like fenugreek, so our food at home is often more authentic than what our mid-sized town has to offer. We did eat out all the time when we lived in NYC.

We still do a nice sit down dinner out about twice a month, but that's for me to get a break. I usually pick a Sichuan place because I love it, and cooking a large variety at once is a pain in the neck. Or sushi. Strangely enough, my town has an amazing sushi bar. It would be almost impossible to replicate the variety and quality of that at home.

At least at most US locations, Domino's now has a special carry-out only deal for a 3-topping large thin or medium pan pizza for $7.99. Also a deal (I think it includes delivery) of at least 2 items (including 2-topping medium, pasta, wings, etc) for $5.99 each with some surcharges for certain items. Here's a storefront where they have a sign advertising those specials:

I missed it, but last week they ended a national deal for a $5.99 two-topping large for carry-out only.

And it's weird. The one I go to prominently displays the $7.99 carryout sign in the window. I was at another location and I asked about specials, where the employee said he wasn't allowed to say anything about specials other than I'd have to look it up myself on the Domino's website. When I asked if they had the $7.99 carryout special, he said yes, but only if I mentioned it.

But the big bargain is Costco. And some locations don't even require membership because they located outside and never check membership for a food court purchase.

Haven't ordered one in over a month, and I couldn't figure out why it seemed so expensive now. Apparently Domino's still has a $7.99 carryout special, but reduced to a single topping. The prices I was seeing charged more for the toppings past the first one. Before that, they reduced it to online/app ordering only, which saves labor costs from an employee taking the order. It's still a relative bargain.

We eat out around 2 a week barring some kind of errand or activity necessitating a meal because the timing is otherwise difficult. Always on the weekend - this way down from pre-covid when we would eat out most nights.

We almost always eat sit down - unless it's after 10pm
And I mean we usually eat in city - but Phoenix is a big city.
