Eat Pray Love

I found the book to be like watching paint dry. It was almost painful...

And ooooh pooooor rich lady. Needs to travel the world to find herself, and her biggest challenge is learning to meditate correctly. Ugh.

I'll pass on the movie. I'd rather glue my eyes ( and ears ) shut.

I can't say what I really think about this woman's journey of discovery. It would violate the Dis rules about religion.

I liked the book. I especially liked the insight into the religious parts of it in India. That was my favorite part of the book.

I will not go see the movie though, I will catch it on cable when it rolls around.

I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one who couldn't get through this book. BOOOORRRRRING! I have no interest in the movie.

Count me in!! I just couldn't get through the book. Read about half, I guess, and gave it away. I won't go see the movie either.

Saw the movie on opening night and really enjoyed it. I had not read the book. It's not particularly slow I don't think, it's just more thoughtful than filled with action.

A friend just raved on and on about how great this book was and how life changing it was for her to read. I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one not thrilled with it and how self indulgent the author is. Blech! Now I have to go sit through the movie with my friend. Ugh.

I haven't seen the movie but I also did not like the book. I found it to be boring, slow... and somewhat shallow and self-indulgent. I might rent the movie when it comes out on DVD just to see how it compares but I will not spend my money seeing it in theaters. I would rather spend my money on a nice Italian meal and recreate my own scene from the book!:thumbsup2
I agree 100%! I didn't even finish the book. No plans to see the movie. Heard it wasn't very good anyways... :rolleyes1

I did the audio book and if I hadn't been trapped in a car with someone reading it to me, I never would have finished the book. I kept thinking she is the picture of a spoiled American.

She goes to find herself with a $200,000 book deal???? Please, I have more respect for those in the mission field than some woman who "can't or won't" say why her relationships didn't work out, so I get a book deal worth $200,000 to find myself over the year.

I will wait until DVD only because I think my goal in life is to see every chick flick ever made, no matter how bad. My friend LOVED this book and lent it to me. I couldn't finish. I could not identify with that character at all. She saw the movie and said it wasn't as good as the book, so I guess that means I will completely hate the movie.

I thought it was just me. I am not even 1/4 through the book and have put it down more than I picked it up. I usually finish evey book that I start but the thought of 300 more pages that are no better that the first 190 is scary!

I'm about halfway through the book. It's not the best book I've ever read, but it's OK. Of course it's self-indulgent, it's about her journey of self-discovery. She had no kids, no attachments, why not travel for a year? I am enjoying the parts in India, I like to learn about other spiritual traditions. I will see the movie on DVD, it's how I see most movies.

I read the book a few years ago and had a tough time getting through it. Found it to be just too boring. My sister wanted to see the movie so we went this past weekend. It was okay. I found it more bearable than the book.
Would I bring my husband? Not unless he needed a nap.

I didn't read the book, but I went to see the movie last night. I enjoyed it, but some lady that was walking out of the theater behind us said, "I couldn't wait for that to be over" guess she didn't enjoy it so much. It was long.

Well, I think it's just HER though. I read all of J. Maarten Troost's books (Sex Lives of Cannibals, Getting Stoned with Savages, and Lost on Planet China). He was fantastic! No whining, no "poor little rich kid," etc. Just good writing, plenty of wry introspection and humorous observations.

I would love it if they came out with a movie based on one of his books.

This was my exact experience. I hadn't read the book and I enjoyed it but on the way out the women behind me were grousing as to how awful the movie was compared to the book. LOL Maybe the movie is best enjoyed by people who haven't read the book?

I thought much some of the scenery was very Animal Kindom-ishy and oh so beautiful. I also didn't see the main character as self indulgent at all...I saw her as seeking her own *self* so to speak. She talked of always having had a boyfriend but that she never took time to be alone, to find out who she was...what she wanted and where she was going. I also thought her search for a religion was intriguing.

It took me a whole year to read that book and I thought I was the only one who just couldn't do it! I would pick it up and hope to make it through a chapter but I always put it right back down.

I think I will wait to watch it on dvd when my dh goes hunting or something - whenever the commercial comes on he looks at me and says in his best Michelle voice, "It took me a whole year to read that book and it will probably take me a whole year to watch it too" rolls his eyes then!!!! I don't know where he gets it from lol!!!
