Eat at home 2!

I move into my new house on Friday and with the move is a new commitment to eat out less. :thumbsup2 I'll be looking a lot on this thread to get new menu ideas.

One thing I am going to try is to take a Saturday or Sunday twice a month, and make a bunch of dishes and freeze them or put them in the fridge so when I get home from work, I can pop something in the oven and it's done. Not being prepared was my nemesis before, and I think this will help. I'm single, I don't need a lot of servings of each dish and so I don't plan on making a new entree every night; I was thinking 2-3 entrees a week, and then I would eat leftovers for lunch and dinner.

One thing I am going to do is make a BUNCH of a yummy marinara sauce I LOVE and freeze it flat in quart size bags, so I can always have pizza sauce, dipper for appetizers, marinara for pasta, etc.

I'm turning over a new leaf, so I'll be stalking this thread for inspiration! Thanks everyone!

When it is cold, my H will sometimes make a pot of chili on the weekend. We don't eat it the first day because it tastes better reheated. So we pull it out during the week when we have a busy night and heat it up for a quick meal.

Yesterday we were off school so I put a chuck roast in the crock pot. We had potatoes and noodles with it and some buttered carrots. It was good!

I have been doing really well at cooking, and not eating out! Not so great at planning meals in advance! I usually go to the store, buy lots and lots, and then come up with something using the crazy amount of food I have in my fridge, pantry and freezer!

So my goal is...figure out what I have, plan meals around it, and USE it! I must make myself buy no more meat until this is gone! A quick peek in the freezer and I found, spaghetti sauce w/meat, shredded chicken for tacos, chicken breasts, ground pork, ground beef, pork shoulder, Italian sausages, talpia, thin pork chops, sirloin steaks...and I'm sure there is more!

Tonight will be chicken burritos and rice! And I will work on coming up with more meals!

I thought this thread could use some pictures...

I've been baking this week for a baptism this weekend as well as the dinner afterward:

I'm sorry, I don't!! My kids hate raisins so that's one recipe I've never pursued!! :confused3

I tossed a frozen pizza in the oven for the kids last night and I threw some pre cooked chicken on top of my salad and called that dinner!

Today I was cleaning like a fury and chopping fruit and veggies for tomorrow. I also have a turkey in the oven now so it can be sliced and reheated tomorrow night.

Tonight's family fun night is a Scooby Doo Super Sleuth Sleepover and I have NO IDEA what kind of menu that should be. I bought the kids some "Scooby snacks" (fruit snacks) but dinner is still a big question mark. DH says Shaggy and Scooby eat everything so I should just make whatever I want. Sandwich fixin's would have been great but we have nothing in the house and no more grocery money left for the week. I'd better see what my friend mr. google has to say! :rotfl:

stayhomemom77: lol - that is too funny. My oldest child says oatmeal cookies are "old" people food. :confused3 I think she really means old fashioned but whatever... :rotfl: Pioneer Woman has a recipe on her website that looks really good. I might give that a go.. I love your Scooby night idea! Sounds like fun!! :) Have a good week!

Trying to come up with a menu for the weekend and next week:

Friday: didn't have the fried chicken salads earlier in the week and dh will be home (not much of a salad person) and dd is not feeling well so wants "comfort food", so instead it will be Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, butter beans and cole slaw

Saturday: Big pot of vegetable soup and crusty bread at lunch (leftovers for next week's lunches) Supper will be Pork chops, rice and pan gravy, field peas and salad

Sunday: church and dinner with the in-laws

Monday: chicken and dumplings, yeast rolls, salad

Tuesday: Meatballs in brown gravy with egg noodles, english peas and salad

Wednesday: Choir performance. Probably will pick up something.

Thursday: Sour Cream Noodle Bake (recipe from Ree Drummond), crusty rolls and salad or cole slaw.

Friday: BBQ Comfort Meatballs (another from Ree Drummond), baked potatoes, creamed corn, salad

I ended up making a giant pot of black bean ragout last night (from the Smitten Kitchen cookbook) which was delicious but made A TON. We ate them last night and tonight and I'll freeze a bunch but even so I have a feeling my meals for the next week will look something like

Monday: Beans
Tuesday: Beans
Wednesday: Beans?
Thursday: Beans...

We had steaks (I got them at a cheap price yesterday at the grocery), mashed sweet potatoes, and green beans

We actually went out to dinner tonight. I told my dh it had been a while since we've been out and this cold weather has kept us cooped up so much.

Well it was awful! They messed up our order twice and we finally gave up and ate what they served. What a bummer! Tomorrow I'll work on the menu plan for the week.

Ok.. so let's get this menu planned for the week...

Saturday- Beef Stew in the Slow Cooker

Sunday- Going to my parents place. They are cooking the fish that my dad and brothers caught ice fishing last weekend

Monday- Going to my inlaws

Tuesday- basketball night so something quick, I think I will try that sour cream casserole bake someone posted above. It looks good.

Wednesday - apparently everyone and their dog is converging on my parents house for a Surprise Birthday dinner for me (it's my 40th). I wish I wasn't so good at figuring out secrets and my husband wasn't so bad at keeping them:rotfl:. My favorite meal ever is Thanksgiving dinner, so my sister is making a Thanksgiving dinner (turkey et al. ) on a Wednesday night and my entire family is coming. Sweetest people ever!

Thursday- Another basketball practice night, so maybe breakfast for dinner

Friday- My actual birthday and I think my husband and I are going out for dinner with the kids.

So not much cooking this week!:)
