Easy tip for saving $$$$$

This "change jar" tip is an oft-recommended savings idea, but I just don't get it. Suppose I have exactly $100 on hand right now. If I have $80 in my wallet and $20 in change, I still have the same $100! The $20 is just "hidden" in a different spot. It's not saving money, it's keeping it in a different place!

The definition of save from dictionary.com:
1. To avoid waste or expense; economize.
2. To accumulate money: saving for a vacation.
3. To preserve a person or thing from harm or loss.

Putting change in a jar is a form of saving just as much as all the other tips given here. I have a change jar and plan on using some of these other ideas as well.

I'm sorry that some of you find budget tips insulting. I know for a fact that they work, but you're welcome to ignore them and continue to count nickels instead of dollars.

WOW! Things quickly take un ugly turn!

A little sensitive there, Mrs. Pete. I think you're taking this a little too seriously. It was all supposed to be a "FUN" way to save money, not an economic lesson. I think too much of your teaching techniques are creeping in.

I feel that I have been reprimanded-what's next? detention? Thank you for your input MrsPete-but again please don't insult us!

MrsPete, thank you for your ideas on saving money. You listed some things I hadn't thought of.

I don't see why everyone is getting so upset. I see where she is coming from. I move around money in all my accounts, but really I haven't done anything special to save money. She just shared some cost cutting measures so your money can grow faster. There is nothing insulting about that.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread but I feel that you've missed the point. It's not your budget tips that we find insulting. Your tips are great for saving money for Disney and they are appreciated. However, it is the tone of your other comments that isn't appreciated. Many of us save coins in addition to saving money in other ways. We are counting coins AND dollars. Don't insult us because we aren't idiots and we do know how to manage our money.

I have to agree that these are all wonderful ideas, however, you shouid not squash the hopeful dreams of people preparing themselves, and in many cases thier children, while planning for what might be, a once in a lifetime trip. If I want to believe that I am "saving" money with my wonderfully decorated Disney Jar, that is what I am going to believe. Now I can take your tips and add to my jar by figuring out the savings on my utilities, and eating out, and add that amount of cash to my jar also. All though it is not earning interest of the money kind, it certainly keeps my family's interest in doing what we can do to ensure that we have a memorable "magical" cruise. Maybe you don't get it, but for those of us who do... we believe!!! :scratchin

I'm with you brotha.... and the jars are probably only for spending money, especially for the children. My son has one and loves to "save" his money there. If someone is planning on paying for the cruise that way, there are bigger issues. It's all in the delivery mrspete ....... waiting for my scolding

dinnysuw - you can get Disney Dollars at the Disney Store.... they are great for that relative or distant friend that has no idea what to get the kids for Christmas or birthday ... just get those and apply them to the shipboard account.

I think MrsPete gave some great ideas...money is a tool, and like any tool becomes more effective the more you know about it. To save money you need to change spending patterns, end of story. Killing the messenger doesn't change the truth of the message.

I understand where Mrs. Pete is coming from. If you save your change, but instead of scronging up quarters from the bottom of your purse to buy a Snickers you break a ten (or worse, go to the cash machine so you have a ten to break), it isn't saving. But if you save your change AND skip the Snickers, you are ahead.

I'm fond of saying there are three ways to "get more" money. Saving it using the sort of things Mrs. Pete is talking about - i.e. not spending it or spending less of it is one of the most practical ways that you see the best results from. Making more of it - by ebay, garage sales, a second job - that takes a lot more effort than not spending it, and often carries tax liability, but its a great way to get more money, particularly if you've already cut a lot of your expenses. Or hiding it - vacation club accounts or change jars or automatic deposits to savings, or rebate checks that go into a seperate account (part saving, part hiding), or buying Disney dollars. The ultimate in "hiding" money - the 401k account. Different ways are going to work differently for different people. Change jars don't work if your solution for no cash is the Visa card, but they work great for someone who operates on a cash basis with maybe a checkbook for backup - and no debit or credit cards in their wallet on a day to day basis. The type of person who - when they run out of money - its gone until they stop by the bank on payday.

My third post was snippy, and I apologize for that.

However, my first two were factual and informative without any "tone" intended. Keep in mind that it's easy to "read in" an insult that isn't intended. I will not make any further comments on this thread.
