Does anyone know if this is a safe area to stay in DC with kids? How close is it to the Mall area? Thanks!

Lisa

I work within walking distance of Eastern Market. It is a fine place to go during the day for lunch and on the weekends. It is not an area I would stay in at night although it's not the worst. I just would not feel comfortable being out and about in that area after sunset.

From this area, many of my co-workers have gone out at lunch and walked to the Mall but it is for exercise purposes and is not a quick walk but kind of a bit of a hefty one.

I agree with Christine. Its not somewhere I'd want to be at night. Although my good friend owns a restaurant in that area so we are there often, but we live in the city and are familiar with it. I don't recommend that area to tourists looking for a hotel room. Your best bet is to stay somewhere a bit closer (Grand Hyatt is a great hotel, right in the heart of it all and its got its own Metro stop) or somewhere like Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom or Georgetown.

We were down in DC last spring for the cherry blossom festival and stayed at the Grand Hyatt. I got a great rate through AAA. It's an easy walk to the mall and there were several family friendly restaurants nearby. Also, the metro stops right under the hotel so that's great in bad weather.

Thanks everyone. The place I was looking at was booked for the week we will be there anyway. I need a place with a full kitchen because my son has many food allergies so eating out is hard to do for us. Because of that, we usually don't stay in hotels since most aren't equipped with a kitchen.

I certainly understand that as my son has peanut and egg allergies.

Does anyone know what the area is like around the convention center? If that won't work then we are looking at the State Plaza Hotel. Any opinions on either area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You would be better off staying in Bethesda, Maryland or Roslyn, Va on a subway line. I know there is a Residence Inn with kitchens in Bethesda that is one or two blocks from the subway.

The convention center area is not bad if you don't wander far from the convention center.
