This will be a first time trip, taking a 13 yo boy and an 11 yo boy. Main goal is Harry potter at both parks. I have never toured at universal, but I am a seasoned disney visitor. Do I attempt to go for the first time on an 8/10 day if that is my only choice? We are not staying onsite, actually will drive 1 hour to get to the park. Thoughts? Go or No?

I can't answer your question, but I'm curious of this as well. Does anyone else have experience with Universal on Easter? We are not staying onsite either and will have 8 kids and 5 adults with us so express passes are not really an option.

It is the second busiest time of the year, after the week of Christmas-New Years, and it is not unheard of for especially IOA to close at capacity. I would expect lengthy lines (no express for Forbidden Journeys or Olivanders at IOA, nor for Hogwarts Express and Gringotts). If crowds don't bother you, I think it would be fine to experience the areas, especially Diagon is such a neat area that we can take quite a lot of time wandering through the shops, checking out the shows, etc.
