Awake at 4am and couldn’t get back to sleep so I just tried to rest for a while, gave up at 6 and rang my dad and read the New York guidebook I’d brought until Steve got up at 7:30. We got some breakfast to eat in the room (fairly light today as we would be having pizza soon, as we were doing a New York pizza tour!) then got showered and dressed and were out by 9:30. We got the subway down to Franklin Street to take some photos of ‘Hook and Ladder 8’ from Ghostbusters then walked to the tour meeting point on Spring Street.

Our guide Scott arrived just before 11am, a bit bonkers but in a good way and he certainly knows his stuff when it comes to pizza! The tour was awesome: We had slices from three different pizzerias: Lombardi’s in Little Italy and Joe’s and John’s which were both in Greenwich Village. Favourite by far has to Lombardi’s (best pizza either of us have ever had. Apparently they take 2 minutes each to cook as the coal fired oven used is so hot, the sauce is actually put on uncooked!) We also visited a restaurant supply store and the oldest Italian cheese shop in New York where we sampled fresh mozzarella (delicious and nothing like the stuff you can buy from the supermarket) We felt the tour was well worth the money and I’d love to do the school bus one next time we visit New York!

Excellent choice of street name there

Scott's friend is opening a pizzeria, so Scott bought him a pizza oven brush... As you do. I think the caption on the building is very appropriate.

We saw a few of these just randomly on the roads in New York, different colours too.

The tour finished around 2:15, which coincided with the heavens opening (on the only day we didn’t bring cagoules, of course!) We were right by Perry Street aka Carrie’s apartment in Sex and the City so we rushed over there and got some quick photos then caught a cab back to the hotel to change and chill for a while.

Surreptitiously taken since the woman who lives there opened the door a few seconds earlier and is reputedly nasty to those she catches taking photos!

We headed out again around 6 and walked to Times Square: I bought some stuff from the Sanrio Store and Steve took pictures. Our conclusion was: OK in small doses but we wouldn’t want to stay in a hotel in this area. We decided to go up to the ‘Top of the Rock’ aka Rockefeller Centre but unfortunately it was so foggy we couldn’t see a thing so after wandering for a bit trying to find a shred of a view we gave up and got our tickets refunded. They prefer if you reschedule but we weren’t sure if we’d have time, something to try again next time I think! Next we bought two cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery (smores and red velvet) and got the subway back to the hotel area.

Before heading out for the evening: Steve's standard holiday pose!

Times Square summed up in a photo: Crowds and adverts!

Is this not the cutest dog ever?!

We decided to have a look round Macy’s and Old Navy where I bought two tops (which I later decided to return) and a cardigan, before walking back to the hotel. It occurred to me earlier that our hotel roof would have really great views of the New York skyline so Steve asked at reception if he might be able to go up there: The receptionist said that should be OK but he’d need be accompanied by someone from maintenance to unlock the door and for safety reasons (there are no guardrails!) We went up to the room, got the call from reception a short while later and Steve got some great pictures of the view from the 19th floor.

We had planned to go out for dinner tonight but after all the pizza and the lovely cupcakes we just didn’t feel hungry enough for a proper meal out so Steve walked to a nearby deli that the lady at reception had recommended and got us some hot sandwiches which were really nice. We ate those and were in bed by 11.

WOW! The pics from the top of your hotel are really good. :)

The pizza tour seemed like a lot of fun and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Lombardi's as that's one of the restaurants we're planning on visiting. Do you happen to remember what the cheese shop is called? DBF and I are both cheese lovers!

Love the sneaky pic of Carrie's apartment, I'm planning on doing exactly the same thing. :thumbsup2

 Can't wait to visit the Sanrio store!

Great tour, I like the sound of doing the school bus one as well, fab photos:goodvibes

Lizzy,
You are good at this--and by "this" I mean both getting the most out of a trip and then reporting it well. You may have been disappointed in the view from the Top of the Rock but the hazy lavendar photo you got that day is beautiful. I'm going to send a link to your report to my sister and a group of her friends. They aren't DISers, but they love NYC and visit every chance they get. Thank you for taking the time to produce this excellent report.

Such an amazing day. a pizza tour how cool. the photos of the food look soooooooo yummy.

What a brilliant idea to take photos from the roof

great day.
