Earthquake in Florida???

It woke me up this morning, I was still sleeping. It rattled stuff in our home (we live in Tampa) but we thought it was someone driving by with the bass too high. My mom called me shortly after though and said she was watching the news and we just had an earthquake.

I did some research on the web after that, this is not the first time FL has experienced an earthquake, there have been several. One has even occurred near the same spot as today's, I believe it was in 1948.

I talked to some people who work at the earthquake ride today and asked if they felt the earthquake and they said "No" and laughed. I didn't feel it either but several people did feel it at Universal Studios.
Darn. :)

I was sitting on the couch and hubby was standing in the kitchen, I was like, what is going on and he looked at me and said what are you talking about and then he saw the water in my glass moving and I said the whole house is shaking. He joked that it was an earthquake and then said it was probably a truck, about an hour later we turned on the news and low and behold it was an earthwquake. So weird!

They said that there have been a few from that same area over the last couple of years, but they have not been big enough to feel on land. The last one was apparently in February and was a 5.2 I think they said. We saw the Shuttle Launch yesterday, from Kennedy Space Center, I thought the earth moved with that...this was just bizarre.

Earthquake insurance is relatively cheap - it's cheaper than flood for those in Florida. It covers your entire replacement if foundation is found to have any cracks from the tremors.

We felt it too. It was about 11:02 this morning. DW heard a buzzing in the tall wall in our family room, turned off the TV and said "do you hear that?" She thought it might be an electrical problem. Just as I was saying "no, I didn't hear anything" the wave hit and it looked to me like different pieces of the house were going in different directions. Very confusing. The After-vibes lasted seconds but enough to make things like fan chains sway.

We did a quick inspection to see if our house showed any cracks, or evidence of being swallowed by a sink hole, then I was off to work.

I asked everybody at my store if they had felt something and they all looked at me like I had two heads! Then a husband of one of the ladies at my store called and reported what he heard on the news...

At least now they don't think I was on drugs or something!

Apparently, from what I saw on the news, the quake was felt best in Volusia County (on the east coast) and Clermont, on the Florida Ridge (or as we call it, the Florida mountains).

It was not scary, just very interesting. The guy on TV said the last one was in 1954, so I figure we are due for the BIG ONE in 2060!
