Hi all,

Can anybody help out please who may be there now or been recently and confirm what attractions are open in US & VB when using early park entry?

We are staying onsite so can get park entry at 8am instead of 9am opening..

Cheers :duck:

Hi

I was there a couple of weeks ago and in US the DA section along with Gringotts. Just an FYI one morning when we were there for early entry Gringotts was down. They opted to open the Mummy to give something for early entry. Plan DA and if there is a problem they will offer something else. That has only happened to me once.

When I was there for early entry a couple of weeks ago we saw the two family raft rides, the smaller tubes, aqua coaster, the body slides. I think the only thing not opened were the two rivers and the wave pool. I am not sure on those as we did the slides and coaster and they were opened.

Early Entry is the best way to go for VB.

Minions, Mummy, and Diagon Alley are the standard three you usually see open for EE at US.

Mummy and HP are confirmed on the Universal website. Minions usually opens early because of the popularity. The great thing about Minions is that it is before the EE check point, so you don’t need to be eligible for EE to ride it if it does open early.

Anyone know when September early opening hours might be posted.? Still just showing July/August in the link?

The US website lists only Mummy and Gringotts for Early Admission. Has anyone seen additional rides open at 8:00 am in recent days? Since we have express passes I don't expect just those two rides to keep us busy for a whole hour.

I noticed Transformers was open 10 minutes early when we went a few weeks ago. I’m not sure if they had just opened it or if they had it open all along or what.

There usually aren’t other rides open except for Minions. People use the time to get breakfast, play with the wands, look through the shops, basically just really explore the HP area without the large crowds that build as the day goes on. All of HP is open, not just the one ride.

Early Entry is also a good time to take pictures without people being in the way and to simply prepare for the day. Get a locker, a map, go to the bathroom, make a plan, rent a wheel chair, etc, all without wasting park time.

We’ve never had trouble finding things to do to fill the time up. However, early entry is intended more for HP fans who really want to explore that area without the crowds. If that’s not your thing, and you have EP, a better use of your time may be sleeping in. There’s no huge benefit to early entry except experiencing the HP areas with less crowds.

Usually in September, early entry is on the Studios side, since that park closes early a lot of days for Halloween Horror Nights. However, some things to keep in mind for September:
- The Studios opens at 8 a.m., therefore early entry is at 7 a.m. At Cabana Bay at least, the food court doesn't open until 7 a.m. so the only food place open was Starbucks. Plan ahead! There is Starbucks in the park open (which was amazingly NOT crowded) and the Cinnabon in City Walk was as well.
- Parts of the Studios (ET and, I believe, the kid's play area don't open until 10 a.m. - no matter when the park actually opens

On our last trip (in April), the one morning Gringotts was down. They had both Rip Ride RockIt and Jimmy Fallon open instead and in addition to Mummy and Minions. Yes, we totally scored that day as we were able to knock out quite a few rides before the park even opened.

On our usual 4 day, 3 night trips, we tend to do early entry once or twice. After that, we've usually done the early entry rides just about enough (and had our fill of wand work).

My dates in Sept (6th and 7th) the parks open at 9am. Do you think they would adjust those hours to the 8am times like most of the rest of Sept or are they prob set at this point? Would Rock the Jesus, or whatever it is called, possibly change those days to earlier opening times, or has it in the past that anyone knows of?

Also a strategy question. On my IOA day would you take advantage of the EE at US then hop over to IOA or is it better to get to IOA gates early and hit the ground running at RD being near the front of the line? I'm torn if it's better to ride the 1st Hogs Xpress, walk from front gate to front gate, or skip EE at US all together to be closer to front at RD. Riding Spiderman multiple times with out EP and at least one ride of FJ is priority, so being at either side of the park is advantageous to us (though I'm not sure what would be best first thing if we plan on being at park close as well).

Riding the Hogwarts Express is the worst option. They won’t open the train until official park opening. By the time you get on the train, ride it over, and then walked to the front of the park for Spiderman, it would probably be 9:20 or later.

You definitely have time to do US first and then walk over if you want. Just make sure you get to US as early as possible. Ride Gringotts and Mummy and then head back toward IOA. You may not be in the very front of the crowd at IOA, but you should be able to make it over there before 9:00.

Let’s say you are in US at 8:00 (like through the gate, not just showing up). You should be able to ride Gringotts by 8:15. We’ll then add 15 minutes to stop by the Mummy on the way out. It should now be around 8:30. Add 10 minutes to walk to IOA, it’s 8:40. You can easily be through the gates and at Spiderman right by opening at 9:00. Please note, this is just an average estimate, so the above steps could take longer or go more quickly. It really depends on the crowds that day. However, if for some reason Gringotts does take longer, you can always skip riding Mummy and simply head straight to IOA.

If you are worried about being rushed, you can always head straight to IOA to begin with. If you want to be at the very front of the crowd, you’ll need to arrive by 8:00. But that really isn't necessary. I’ve not found morning “rope drop” at Universal to be as bad as Disney. Needing to be in the very front is actually more important for the early entry park than it is for the non early park. Everyone at the early entry park are heading toward the same two rides as those rides are the only ones open which makes the lines build up fast. At the non early park, the whole park is open and not everyone is going to the same place, so lines for rides build slower. On top of that, many people will still be in the early entry park and won’t switch over until much later in the day. Then when you factor in that many people want to head to HP first thing, your chances of repeat riding Spiderman with no or a minimal wait become very good even if you weren’t at the very front of the crowd at the gate.

Awesome, thank you for the detailed answer, exactly what I needed to know!!!

One more question if you or anyone else can...

When I go that route I may do Mummy and Minions instead of Gringott, then head to front of IOA for that EE day, then do Diagon Alley the next EE so we can spend all of our time there for that EE for rides and spells? If I go that route is Hogsmeade stuff and the Express typically manageable in the evening? We plan on (is gate dropping more appropriate than RD? lol) getting there early, break after lunch for a couple of hours, then heading back mid to late afternoon to close of park for each one.

Here’s the thing about Minions. It isn’t officially open, so it may or may not be. Then, it is located before the checkpoint for early entry eligibility, so anyone can ride it. Since it is one of the few rides for children lines build very quickly. I’ve seen 30 to 45 minute waits before official park opening before. It is also 14 minutes long compared to the Mummy and Gringotts which are only about 5 minutes long each. All this is to say you probably will not be able to fit it in and still make IOA by opening.

You have two options if you want to try for it.

Option 1) Be at the very front of the early entry crowd to get in the park. Then head to Minions very first and try for a walk on. This may or may not work depending on how early they open it. If you ride right at 8:00 without waiting, you should be ok to do Mummy and make IOA. If you miss the first group, you’ll likely have at minimum a 15 wait for the ride to cycle through before you can enter. Then another 8 minutes in the actual ride. It will be 8:30 or after by that point and doing Mummy and getting to IOA may be tight. If you are ok with getting there right at 9:00, you’ll probably be fine.

Option 2) Ride in the stationary seating section. This section is always a walk on. The line can be 2 hrs long, and you can walk straight up and ride. You’ll still need to time it right because again if you have to wait for the group in front of you to cycle through and then for you yourself to go in, you’re looking at the whole experience taking 20 to 30 minutes even for a walk on. The benefit to the stationary seating is that there’s no real advantage to riding first thing in the morning. You could do the stationary seating at anytime during your trip.

Personally, I’d ride Gringotts and do the spells two separate days. More people are catching on to doing the spells during EE. Focus on the spells during the first few minutes the park is open while others are rushing to ride. Because as the morning goes on, those same people who are rushing to ride will get off the ride and head for the spells as you were planning to do. Also, when you are done with the spells, take time to check out all the shops before they fill up with people. They are very small, and it only takes a few people for them to start to feel very crowded.

Here’s the thing about the HP sections, they stay busy all the time. You can go during the least crowded time of the year, walk the rest of the park and not pass a single person, but when you enter one of the HP areas, you’ll see people. They are definitely better during early entry, especially the first half of the hour as people trickle in. Night is kind of hit or miss. It is less crowded than earlier in the day, but that doesn’t mean not crowded or that there aren’t still lines for rides. It really depends on how crowded it was that day to begin with, how late the parks are open, and if the rain has come through and ran people off. If your options are afternoon or evening, definitely do evening.

Beginning of September hopefully won’t be too crowded. We’ve done both parks multiple times with and without EP. Yes, it is easier and more enjoyable with EP, but you can still do a lot without it. Try for the busiest attractions first and last like it seems you are already planning. Use single rider for the moderately popular rides, and enjoy the less popular rides like ET when the lines are longest for everything else. You can also take advantage of shows and long meals during the busiest parts of the day or return to your hotel for a pool break. We routinely show up with no plan and just wander around doing whatever doesn’t have a long line, and we get lots done. I don’t suggest that for first time visitors, but it just gives you an idea that you can do well without EP.

I like the way you think! Thank you so much for this information. Universal is so much easier to plan. Making a guideline and keeping it fluid how the day dictates is so much easier.

I like your idea of splitting up Diagon Alley during EE, to enjoy it, instead of saving it into one. Makes alot of sense and we're generally pretty good on getting to the gates early at the times we plan for in general, so being near the front each EE shouldn't be an issue. We'll plan on doing Mummy and Gringotts on our IOA day like you suggested since those are faster for us to get in and back out to the front gate. If we don't make it to IOA gate before 9, or if we get out of Gringotts later than hoping for, I don't think it will be the end of world though too. We'll just let the day play out in terms of Hogsmeade it sounds like. I want to knock out Spiderman (at least twice) and Kong, then head to FJ and then play it by ear from there. Ideally it would be nice to ride the 3 water rides around lunchtime before we take a break back at CB, but Im sure most will have same idea to ride water rides during that time since thats when the heat will start to be really revving up, but we'll see. Other than seeing the new nighttime show at US, my plan was just to spend the evenings in the different HP lands to do whatever we didn't have time for in the mornings, unless they are packed still.

If we get there early enough on our EE spell day, maybe we'll do Minions then if we get first ride, and if not first ride we'll just skip and do spells, with maybe another ride of Gringotts afterwards if the kids did all the spells and shop-looking they wanted. Another option is since we have APs we could have the option to come back a 3rd morning on the day we are checking out and ride Minions and/or anything else we wanted or missed out on and then bailing before checkout if we still have the energy. Other than checking out of Universal, and checking into Disney, we don't have anything else going on that 3rd day except maybe meeting local family for lunch or dinner and relaxing (We have MNSSHP the next night).

Thanks again for your help, it was tremendous and made me change my touring plans to something more realistic and efficient!
