Early departs

When you have to get up early do you bother going to bed

I would go to bed, but would only end up getting 2 or 3 hours of sleep (if that, as I was always paranoid I'd sleep through the alarm and/or the alarm wouldn't go off ). With that said, after booking 1 or 2 very early flights, we later but found that adding a night to our trip and getting in late the night before works out better for us. It is a little more expensive as we are paying for that extra night at the resort just to sleep, but it is such a good feeling to wake up the next morning ready to go instead of spending half the day traveling.

I routinely book 6-7am departures for myself!!! Crazy to do, since it means getting up around 3am!! And I don't sleep very well that night...like others, I'm afraid the alarm won't go off! But I do try to get to bed earlier the night before so that I can get at least 4-5 hrs of sleep.

So, how did your flight go? Did everything work out okay?

It depends. Am I going to bed at 1am and I have to wake up at 2am? Then I might just doze on the couch.

Am I going to bed at 10p and I have to wake up at 3am? Absolutely!

I've even had some times where I need to get up at 12:30am, and I'll go to bed at 10, get an hour or so of sleep, go to work at 12:30, get home about 3, then sleep some more.

Good question.

From where we live we really only had very early AM departures (connecting flights were our only choices) to choose from if we wanted to get to MCO at a reasonable time.

After several years of no/not enough sleep in airport hotels, United added a red-eye overnight flight that got us to MCO by 12 PM or so. I mean we may as well "not sleep" on a plane instead of paying for a hotel. We took it twice and really liked it.

Alas, they've now dropped the overnight one and replaced it with a 9:30 AM one. Back to the airport hotel, but at least we'll get a few more hours sleep now and miss the early AM rush hour. Though getting to MCO at 7 PM is not the greatest. :)

Yes. When I went in 2011, we had a 7:00 flight out of Syracuse. We got to the airport about 5:15 that morning. I think I got up at about 3:30 or 3:45 that morning.

We always pick the earliest flight out, so have to leave the house by 3:00am to get to the airport two hours prior to our flight. We usually go to bed around 10:00pm. My husband and mom usually sleep until 2:30am and I'm up at 2:00am to shower and make double sure we didn't forget anything (have to pack my mom's insulin and my Victoza injection pens at the very last minute).

Yeah, we try to get some sleep, then head to the airport. Then, I try to get some more sleep on the flight. Eye mask, ear plugs or noise canceling ear buds with some relaxing music playing, and a make shift "scarf blanket" normally do the trick. :)
