My wife and I will be arriving late with our family.

My parents will be arriving much earlier in the day.

Will they be able to check in when they arrive even though we hold the reservation and are the DVC owners?

As long as their name is on the reservation. If you are getting the Dining plan, they will have to pay for the plan for all guests if they check in first.

AND provided the room is ready. DVC doesn't guarantee checkin until "after 4:00" (read, you might not get into your room until dinnertime). We've had really good luck however, and if your parents get there early and their name is on the reservation they can get "checked in" and leave their luggage with the valet until the room is ready.

I would caution, however, against arriving at DVC with the intention of being able to immediately get into the room for a shower/nap upon arrival and no backup plan (our backup plan is 'swimsuits in the carryon, loungechairs by the pool).

I absolutely agree. I never plan to be in my room until at least 5:00PM (sometimes later). I've only been a member for 2 years and have stayed at a DVC resort now 7 times and have never had a room ready early and we never travel during busy times (no holidays for us). The earliest we've ever gotten into a room in these 7 stays now is 4:30PM. The OP should make sure that the folks know this when checking in. We, of course, always checkin by noonish and pick up our room cards for the DDP credits.

We once had a young 18 year old guest check in early in the morning, and we didn't arrive until after noon. We were quite surprised to find he had already checked in and was sitting in the living room watching TV waiting for us!
