About a month out, I ended up pulling the trigger and booking the early bird SWA check in, since at our 24 hour mark I would not be readily at a computer.
For our Detroit-Orlando flight, we were A 35-39. This was the first flight of the day out of Detroit, completely full. We got 5 seats in about row 10--3 of us on one side and 2 on the other. A nice single woman sat with my daughters in the aisle and my son sat between DH and I.
On the way home we were A 25-29. This flight had originated in Ft. Myers so some people were already onboard. We were in row 14 or 15, but being close together for us is more important than which row (esp. going home, when you just hurry off the plane to go wait for your luggage). A man sat next to the girls until Nashville(we stopped there both ways but didn't get off of the plane) , then a woman sat with them to Detroit.
I liked Southwest. I thought the seats were more comfortable than Northwest and Airtran, the last two airlines we flew. I liked being able to let the kids each have a smaller suitcase instead of having DH and DS share and the girls share one bag, to save baggage fee $. The crew was also pretty funny.
I didn't like that 3 of 4 landings were pretty rough. The last one back to Detroit I swear the plane went side to side! DH liked most of the southwest experience, but he was uncomfortable on the plane coming back for some reason. He also complained about early bird before we left, but after going through the process said it was definately worth it.
