Ear piercing and swimming?

I would trust your Dr.'s office more than a place in the mall. Just make sure they use a needle and not a gun. And remember, do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean the holes. This will only slow the healing process. Just use anti-bacterial soap, and do not let anyone touch the new piercing without washing your hands first.
Obviously I agree ::yes::

They will do a much better job there, and it will be done in a sterile environment! I would definitely trust them!

And of course I will say no hydrogen peroxide or alcohol... just regular dial soap and I do swear by sea salt soaks as well!
Something else to add, if the ears feel dry (the skin around it, which can happen) a little all natural Vitamin E oil will work well too. I've used that around my belly piercing (at the suggestion of my piercer) and had no troubles. Used Bert's Bee's brand.

I hope she enjoys her new earrings :)

Gosh, now you guys got me thinking. I posted earlier about my DD-10 trying twice to get her ears pierced (each time we had to let close up due to infections) but each time we got them done at Claires. Hmmmm....maybe it wasn't all about the chlorine like I was thinking :confused3 ?

DD's Pediatrician had individual disposable piercers with the earrings in them (24K). Not sure what piercer was, but nothing like at the mall, not a gun! Dr. said he does them because he does NOT want his patients going to the mall. She had the privacy of a room and great care instructions from him. Plus he told me to call them if she had any trouble. Good luck! :)

I don't know what your Dr. is using, but I am not a fan of any method of piercing that does not use a needle. A true piercing needle is very sharp and hollow. It takes out a small "plug" of skin to be replaced by the jewerly. A piercer that uses a sharp earring is just tearing the skin to make a hole. And that hurts more then a very sharp needle. However, I do think that going to the Dr. instead of a place in the mall is the best thing if you can not find a APP piercer.

My DD will be 10 soon. She wants her ears pierced. All of her friends are getting them done.
I am concerned she swims 2-3 times a week for 11/2 and then dives 1 time per week for an hour.
I went to 2 different ear piercing places and got 2 different answers. One said no wait another said fine just make sure she cleans them after swimming and drys them well.
If she gets them done on Wed. she wouldn't be in the water again until Sunday.
Any opinions?

I work for Claires and was trained to ear pierce.

She can swim as much as she wants to. Just make sure she cleans them with the anisceptic afterwards. I see absolutley no reason why not.

Good luck!

One summer of jumps from the high dive and my earrings went into my earlobe and the lobe closed. ER had to pull it out the back (OUCH!!!).

After every swim session--and intermittently during her dive session...she should feel for her earrings and make sure that they are not recessing. Otherwise, she should be fine.

I think my experience was a fluke.

Oh my!
At this point I don't know if I ever want her to have them pierced....not just from hearing your story but plugs of skin, infections, torn holes...Not even sure I will be able to stomach it! Currently she is only diving mainly off the 1 meter and will jump from the 3 and 6 meter. I hope by the time we do get this done they will be well healed and she can take them out for diving....

I can't remember when I had mine done, but do they put anything on it to numb it?

I think I'd wait. DS is a swimmer. When he had his wisdom teeth out, the doctor said he had to stay out of the pool for about a week. He didn't want pool water to get in his mouth and cause infection. I know ears are different from a mouth, but if germs in the pool could cause infection one place, they could another.

I posted as a precautionary measure--not to scare you.

My ears had been pierced a while and I just didn't change them that often.

Good care will prevent most of this unless you or your child just happens to have sensitive ears.

For example--I can only wear silver or gold earrings....I cannot wear the surgical steal posts as they cause my ear to be infected. Now that I know that, I don't wear those kind of earrings.

My earrings never got stuck in my earrs again after that one time.

Ok...need a little help...
I called around and no tatoo place would let her in the door. (at least the onces I thought would be an ok place) Didn't know of any "piercing" places. I talked to her doctor at her last physical and he said just take her to the mall......
So I did. We went to Clairs. I know some of you are cringing right now...but it went well. No problems. We are now almost 4 weeks into it. And now have a problem. Yesterday I noticed one earring looked a little set into the ear. I was able to move it out and no problems. She said it hurt just a little when I did.
So I kept and eye on it all yesterday. Fine.
She woke up this morning and it was really inside the ear. Again I was able to work it back out. The ear looks fine, not red or anything.
But I am afraid it is going to get caught in the ear. Any idea what I can do? Should I change the earring?

I'm a nurse and I don't trust those mall ear-piercing places either. They just don't look clean. I took my DD(then 12) to her ped who did it a a few seconds. She hasn't had the first sign of trouble with her ears, cleans them herself and totally takes care of things.

I had that happen to my ear. Long time ago now, but I 'lost' the earring in my ear. My step-dad took it out (he's a dentist, so knows how to deal with infections and extractions!) He wouldn't let me put the ear ring back in. He said the stud was way to small to be used as a first piercing. I put another, larger stud in, kept it clean and had no problems.
