Our next door neighbor's son is becoming an Eagle Scout today. Is it appropriate to give a gift?

We've known him for a couple of years, he seems to be a pretty great kid. DW and I were invited to the ceremony, but are unable to attend. We're not super close to the family, but they are nice neighbors and we do like them.

Are gifts ok? He's a high school senior, we were thinking of a gift card (maybe for a convenience store for gas, snacks, etc.)

TIA for the advice.:)

People often give gifts at Eagle Scout courts of honor, but they are by no means required or expected. If you'd like to give him something, go right ahead, whatever it is will be fine.

Most people attending my friends sons ceremony last week brought some type of gift, most were checks/gift cards. I usually give a check.

A gift card would be fine. A lot of people give gift cards. If you are closer to the boy then a gift with Significance to the award happens often, like a pen with an eagle, a money clip with engraving, commemorative coin, watch, you get the idea! But for others the usual is a gift card or check/money in a card.

It is nice of you to think of him, It's a lot of work and time to get your Eagle and I"m sure he will appreciate anything you do.

You just reminded me I need to get a couple cards for the same thing, I'm behind. 2 of the boys he started with have finished their Eagles this year. My DS is getting ready to get his project approved to start for his Eagle project, working on the last couple badges now.

We just attended one and I gave a card with cash in it and an Eagle Scout coin that I bought where they sell scout supplies. Gifts are not required or expected but everyone we sat with brought a gift (mostly cards). Its such a high accomplishment for a young man!

I think it is a nice gesture that will be appreciated, but it's not something required. A high school senior boy would probably love a gift certificate for food or gas for his his car. ::yes::

My son is an Eagle Scout... (Proud Mom here!)
We didn't have a huge Court of Honor, with lots of neighbors, friends, etc. But, my son got a few gifts.. Mostly cards, gift-cards, cash... That sounds good! Especially if one is not really close enough for a more personal gift.

We did have very nice Ceremony.
I had put together a short slide show, starting with him in First Grade in his new Cub Scout uniform... Showing him participating in all kinds of scouting... ending with a portrait type photo of him, now 6 foot tall, in his full BSA uniform... set to the music of Joe Mcelderry (X-Factor UK winner) singing 'The Climb'.

My husband helped my son come up with a very, very, nice speech.
The leaders "pinned" my son with his Eagle Scout pin. Secured the Eagle Scout bandana around his neck. And, then, the ScoutMaster has everyone 'tell stories' on funny, interesting, more personal, things about the new Eagle Scout. It was also my son's 16th Birthday, so all the other scouts in the troop got together and did a traditional thing where they surround the scout, closer and closer, singing a crazy Happy Birthday Song.

We catered in supper, and had both a Congratulations Eagle Scout Cake and Birthday Cake.

It really was such a special evening!

Mom of 2 Eagles (and wife to another) here. No gift is required. Most people will just give a congrats card. Others may give cash/gift cards/eagle themed items.

Another mom of an Eagle! Most people will give cards, with mostly family and very close friends being the ones giving gifts.

My nephew became an Eagle Scout a few years ago, and I made a contribution in his honor to the animal shelter where he did his Eagle Scout project.
